Disgaea Mayhem PAX East Preview

Disgaea Mayhem is a big change for the series, and surprisingly, that’s a good thing. Unlike previous Disgaea games which were turn-based RPGs, this one plays much more like an action RPG. Going into the preview, I definitely wasn’t expecting this new direction.

I played the first three levels, which offered a good range of challenges. The combat felt like the classic Dynasty Warriors games, but with really impressive animations for special moves. Overall, it was fun, though I mostly just got to test out the fighting system.

While the battles looked complex, they actually felt pretty straightforward to play. This preview from PAX will be brief because I only had time to try the three combat levels. But let’s still discuss how the gameplay works and what I liked about the game!

What is Disgaea Mayhem?

Disgaea Mayhem is a fast-paced action game, a bit like Dynasty Warriors but with a more anime style. You play as N. A., a mercenary on a quest to recover the stolen sweets of Princess Tichelle. Expect a lot of fighting – N. A. will battle through levels, defeating enemies while improving his skills and equipment.

This game is a fun, straightforward adventure that really focuses on its combat system. I haven’t experienced much beyond the fighting itself, but it feels like the developers prioritized making the battles enjoyable above all else. And thankfully, the combat does have some satisfying complexity to it.

Disgaea Mayhem is a big change for the series, and surprisingly, that’s a good thing.

The game offers a wide variety of weapons, each with unique attacks and ways to play. While some weapons work better in certain situations, they’re all effective. Each weapon has three abilities for dealing with enemies – like clearing groups or stunning them – and one powerful ultimate ability that can quickly defeat most foes in its area.

You’ll progress through different areas on a map, defeating enemies until you’ve met the goal for each one. Then you’ll battle bosses who have unique and unpredictable attacks. Once you finish a map, you’ll get a score, experience points, and new items. After that, you can either start the next level or replay the map to try and beat your high score, or experiment with different weapons.

A Silly, But Engaging Adventure

Disgaea Mayhem is a genuinely fun game, and it’s packed with humor. The story is completely over-the-top and the main character is barely even identified, but that doesn’t detract from the enjoyment. Sometimes, simply battling endless waves of enemies is more satisfying than a complex, story-driven experience.

The game was pretty easy until the last area. The final boss used a lot of attacks that hit a wide area, and since I could only punch, I kept having to retreat. Even so, it’s still fun to just fight enemies and see the damage numbers climb.

I had a lot of fun playing Mayhem – it’s basically a non-stop action game focused on intense combat. The animations were well-done and visually appealing, which is great because you see them constantly. While it’s not likely to be a groundbreaking game, I only got to experience the fighting, so it’s too early to say how the rest of the game will be.

I’m so excited, we don’t have to wait much longer for this action RPG – it’s coming out later this year! I can’t wait to try it and see if it lives up to the hype. Honestly, even if you’ve never played a Disgaea game before, this seems like the perfect place to start. It doesn’t look like you need to know anything about the previous games to jump right in and have fun!
