Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is Once Again Asking the Eternal Question

Season two of Daredevil: Born Again is a significant step up from the first, and many fans now consider it as good as the original Daredevil series on Netflix. The action sequences are much more exciting, Matt Murdock spends more time in costume, and familiar characters play bigger parts – all things viewers wanted to see. With Daredevil fighting on boats and in prison, and a third season already planned, it won’t be long before fans start requesting a new video game starring the Man Without Fear.

It doesn’t look like a Daredevil video game is in the works – there haven’t been any credible rumors about one. The constant requests for a Daredevil game come from fans who love the character and believe he’d be perfect for the medium. For now, fans are limited to seeing him in team-based games like Marvel Rivals and Ultimate Alliance. However, with the success of the Born Again series, a dedicated Daredevil game could realistically be approved in the future.

A Daredevil video game was planned in 2004, probably to take advantage of the popularity of the Ben Affleck film, but it was canceled. This remains the only effort to create a single-player game centered around the character.

What Would a Daredevil Game Be Like?

It’s easy to envision how a Daredevil game could work. Because he lives a double life, the game could offer a lot of different gameplay options, including features common in superhero games. Here’s what a Daredevil game could include:

  • Combo-focused combat and stealth mechanics comparable to Batman: Arkham and Marvel’s Spider-Man.
  • An open-world version of Hell’s Kitchen that takes advantage of Daredevil’s billy club traversal.
  • A deep rogue’s gallery for side stories and boss fights, including Kingpin and Bullseye alongside slightly deeper cuts like Typhoid Mary, Mr. Fear, and The Owl.
  • Choice-based lawyer segments where players can succeed or fail at defending Matt Murdock’s clients, allowing for (or costing players) some extra upgrades.
  • Puzzles that make use of Daredevil’s heightened senses, with tracking via his enhanced smell and eavesdropping via his sharp hearing also being viable. Radar vision could be another mechanic.

A Daredevil game has incredible potential thanks to the character’s consistently high-quality comic book history. While some storylines have been weaker, most are considered classics – arguably second only to Batman in terms of consistently good writing. A game could succeed by drawing inspiration from almost any of Daredevil’s best writers. It could revisit Frank Miller’s iconic work, explore more ambitious ideas like Brian Bendis’ take on Kingpin and Daredevil, or adapt Ed Brubaker’s compelling prison story. For a game aiming to be different from the MCU shows, Mark Waid’s lighter, more adventurous style could be a great fit. Alternatively, Charles Soule’s run introduces interesting characters like Blindspot who could be an NPC companion, or Chip Zdarsky’s work could even allow players to control Elektra alongside Daredevil. There’s so much material to work with that a Daredevil game could easily become a whole series of games.

The Perfect Developer For a Daredevil Game is Just as Obvious Now as It Was Years Ago

Fans have come up with many ideas for a Daredevil game, and it seems likely Marvel Games will eventually see it as a worthwhile project. While Insomniac Games is currently busy with Marvel’s Wolverine – a game that might even feature a Daredevil appearance – and also working on a leaked X-Men game and Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, they’re still the ideal studio to develop it. They’re already creating a connected Marvel universe, and the combat system from Spider-Man would translate well to Daredevil. Plus, Marvel’s Wolverine appears to be demonstrating their ability to handle a more mature and gritty style. Just as they were the top choice for a Daredevil game during the height of the Netflix series in 2018, Insomniac remains the best fit today. Even with a full schedule, a Daredevil game developed by Insomniac, even if it’s several years off, would be well worth the wait.
