As a big fan, I’ve always loved how the Final Fantasy games create these amazing worlds – usually with a fantasy or sci-fi feel, or a cool blend of both. Some games really nail the world-building, but it’s tough to compare sometimes because of all the spin-off titles, like with Final Fantasy 4. But even without spin-offs, the lore can be incredible, and Final Fantasy 16 is a perfect example of that!

We’re going to rank several Final Fantasy games based on the richness of their stories and how believable their worlds feel. Do these games offer unique and detailed settings, or do they fall into familiar fantasy tropes? We’ll be looking at titles like Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy Tactics, and World of Final Fantasy to find out which ones truly stand out.

8. Final Fantasy 13

As Above, So Below

Final Fantasy 13 takes place in a world divided between Cocoon, a peaceful, floating city, and the wild lands below called Gran Pulse. The game introduces a lot of new concepts and terminology which can be confusing, especially since it’s a fairly straightforward JRPG. However, the two follow-up games helped clarify the story and world-building, making everything easier to understand.

Initially, Final Fantasy 13 presented a conflict between two worlds, but the story quickly escalated into a battle between gods, with the protagonist, Lightning, unexpectedly becoming a god herself. The game features complex elements like time travel, alternate realities, and dangerous magic. Although it’s not everyone’s favorite Final Fantasy game, Square Enix deserves credit for taking risks and moving beyond typical fantasy storylines.

7. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles

A Non-Stop Pilgrimage

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was an action role-playing game for the GameCube that let you create a character and play either solo or with up to three friends. The game’s story centered around a poisonous fog spreading across the land, and it was best experienced with a full team of four heroes who needed to find water for a special tree to stop the darkness.

The game originally featured a unique mechanic where one player had to constantly carry a bucket of water to shield the group from a dangerous, lingering fog – a compelling bit of world-building. This fog was never truly cured, meaning players were stuck in a perpetual journey just to survive. While later installments dropped the bucket requirement, the original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was surprisingly ambitious for its size, boasting a creative concept, a rich backstory, and a diverse cast of characters.

6. World Of Final Fantasy

A Celebration Of The Franchise

As a big Final Fantasy fan, I always thought of World of Final Fantasy as a really fun way to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary. The story follows these two twins, Lann and Reynn, who get pulled into a book filled with all sorts of characters from past Final Fantasy games. It was so cool how each game was basically represented by one hero and a little town or dungeon – like a tiny, self-contained version of the whole game!

Characters like Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 and Bartz from Final Fantasy 5 appear in this game. Each area has its own challenges, and the main characters solve them by befriending and even riding monsters into battle. It’s a lighthearted spin-off title, not meant to be overly serious, but the concept of a world where all the Final Fantasy games coexist is a fantastic setting.

5. Final Fantasy 14

To Eorzea And Beyond

While not initially intended as a tribute to the entire Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy 14 has evolved into one over the years. First launched in 2010 and then significantly revamped in 2013, the game began on the continent of Eorzea. Through numerous updates, expansions, and in-game events, it has greatly expanded, incorporating lore and elements from across the Final Fantasy universe.

Players used to be able to find references to classic games like Final Fantasy 6, with items like Magitek Armor, or explore a reimagined version of the world from Final Fantasy Tactics. But beyond these nods to the past, Final Fantasy 14‘s world of Eorzea is incredibly detailed and expansive, featuring everything from vast plains and towering mountains to lively cities populated by a variety of races and filled with airships. Because it’s a large online game, Eorzea truly feels like a place players could realistically imagine themselves living in.

4. Final Fantasy 10

Sports And Religion

Unlike other Final Fantasy games, Final Fantasy 10 takes place on a chain of tropical islands surrounded by a vast ocean. Instead of fighting between kingdoms, the world is united by a shared religion that requires Summoners to make regular pilgrimages to calm Sin, a massive, destructive creature. Conflicts aren’t settled through war, but with Blitzball – a fast-paced, underwater sport similar to soccer – and people are fiercely loyal to their teams.

The world in Final Fantasy 10 is built on a fear of technology, stemming from an ancient event where people prioritized machines over their deities. The sequel doesn’t add much to the game’s backstory, mainly showing what life is like after the main story ends. However, the tropical setting of Spira is widely considered one of the best in the JRPG genre.

3. Final Fantasy 9

The Definition Of Final Fantasy In The Gaming Dictionary

Final Fantasy 9 is set on the world of Gaia, a place much like Earth, with large kingdoms and many different types of people. Traveling across the game’s world feels vibrant and lively – you often see airships flying around, as they are the primary way people get around.

While the game doesn’t go into great detail about its races or kingdoms, Final Fantasy 9 creates a vivid world through its visuals. It’s a classic fantasy adventure and arguably the best representation of the Final Fantasy series overall, though it doesn’t include the traditional quest to find elemental crystals. The game’s charm comes from the little things, like the Moogle delivery service and explanations of characters like the Black Mage.

2. Final Fantasy Tactics

The Power Of Ivalice

Final Fantasy Tactics is set in the troubled world of Ivalice, a land marked by the remnants of lost civilizations. Through optional side quests, players discover evidence of extinct races like the Moogles, shattered floating continents, and forgotten robots. What’s unique about this game is that its backstory and universe were later developed and featured prominently in the full-fledged game, Final Fantasy 12, bringing the secrets of those side quests to life.

Two sequels followed Final Fantasy Tactics, but their versions of the world of Ivalice are more fantastical and their place in the overall story is a bit unclear. Vagrant Story, a unique game that blends turn-based and action combat, is also set in Ivalice. While the original Final Fantasy Tactics already had a compelling world filled with political conflict between noble families, Square Enix has done an even better job of building upon that foundation.

1. Final Fantasy 7

An Expanding Universe

Final Fantasy 7 has the most extensive collection of related content of any game in the series, including numerous spin-off games, films, and books. The original game centered on a band of heroes fighting to protect their planet from Shinra, a greedy corporation, and Sephiroth, a dangerous man who believed destroying the world was necessary to rebuild it.

The various sequels and prequels expand the story and give more background on groups and characters, like Zack, a longtime friend of the main character Cloud, who starred in his own game, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7. With a third remake already planned, the world of Final Fantasy 7 is constantly growing, and it seems like its story may never truly end.
