After 12 years, Elder Scrolls Online will finally support crossplay, according to Zenimax Online. This is a big deal because the game wasn’t originally built to allow players on different platforms to play together.
Besides overall game restrictions, each gaming platform also has rules based on location. For example, players on the North American PlayStation 5 servers can’t play with friends on the European servers. While this is expected to improve, it will take time.
ZeniMax Online Studios announced that crossplay won’t be available in The Elder Scrolls Online in 2026, and there’s currently no estimated timeframe for its release. While a specific date is unknown, Schlitt shared some updates on the development process.
ESO crossplay is in ‘active development’
Kira Ross Schlitt, the player team lead for Elder Scrolls Online, recently shared that developers are currently working on adding crossplay to the game. She explained that implementing crossplay is a complex process, impacting many aspects of the game, and ZeniMax Online Studios wants to ensure the experience is seamless and enjoyable for all players.
Schlitt also explained that the studio is carefully planning the launch to ensure a positive experience. She said, “We want to avoid making anyone feel left behind or overwhelmed when it goes live, so we’re thinking a lot about how to bring people together successfully and make sure everyone feels enthusiastic and capable.”
So, that covers everything we currently know about crossplay in ESO. Producer Susan Kath previously shared that crossplay isn’t planned for release before 2026. However, she did confirm that when it does arrive, it will be paired with cross-progression, letting you continue your game progress on any platform – that’s a huge benefit!
Crossplay in The Elder Scrolls Online will be a big help to players who play by themselves and have trouble finding groups for difficult content like dungeons and raids. This is especially true for console players, particularly those on Xbox, where the number of active players has been decreasing.
I’ve often found it difficult to find groups for specific dungeons using the Dungeon Finder. Also, some areas of the game are surprisingly deserted, making it hard to tackle public events and world bosses without a coordinated team. Implementing crossplay could solve these long-standing problems.
Although crossplay isn’t expected until 2027, a new update specifically for Xbox consoles is coming out soon that should address some of the problems we’ve been seeing.
ESO gets Xbox Play Anywhere support on June 2nd
Starting June 2, 2026, if you own The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) on Xbox, you’ll be able to continue playing where you left off on PC using the Xbox PC client. ESO is adding Xbox Play Anywhere, which lets you buy the game just once and play it on all your Xbox devices.
Your game progress will continue across different platforms. For example, if you’re playing The Elder Scrolls Online on Xbox in North America, you can use the same account to pick up where you left off on the PC version, also in North America. Keep in mind that regional restrictions still apply – you can’t switch between North American and European servers, or play with people on those different servers, until full crossplay is available.
Good news! You won’t need an Xbox Game Pass subscription to play The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) on PC using the Xbox app, according to a recent post by Susan Kath on Reddit. This also applies to handheld devices like the ROG Ally that work with the Xbox PC app.
