I’ve been following Cinemersive Labs since they started in 2022, and I’m really impressed with what they’re doing. They’re a UK company building tech that takes regular photos and videos and turns them into amazing, immersive 3D experiences for VR and AR. Basically, they’ve figured out how to capture, create, and deliver 3D content that you can actually move around inside of – seeing it from any angle. They do this with their own special camera setups, but also with software that can convert existing images. Plus, they’re building cool interactive 3D photos and apps to view it all in VR. It all adds up to a really innovative company pushing the boundaries of how we experience images!
Cinemersive Labs Is Joining PlayStation’s Visual Computing Group
On April 2nd, Sony announced it was buying Cinemersive Labs, though the price wasn’t revealed. This is the 30th company Sony has fully acquired since November 2022. Sony plans to integrate Cinemersive Labs into its Visual Computing Group, a team dedicated to researching and developing machine learning and neural networks to improve PlayStation’s graphics and streaming. This group was created earlier in 2024 after Sony purchased iSIZE, a UK company that specializes in using neural networks for video streaming, and combined it with an existing PlayStation AI team.
Sony hasn’t said when it expects to finalize the purchase of Cinemersive Labs, which implies the deal is progressing smoothly. Unlike with bigger, more complicated acquisitions, Sony didn’t mention any potential delays or a specific timeframe, likely because they don’t anticipate issues with regulatory approval.
The Future of Cinemersive Labs’ Meta Quest App Is Now Up in the Air
I’m a big fan of Cinemersive Labs, even though they’re mostly known for their behind-the-scenes imaging tech. They actually made this amazing app called Parallax for Meta Quest headsets – it lets you view photos in incredible 3D! As of April 2026, it’s one of the top-rated apps in the Meta Horizon Store’s Travel section, with a 4.7-star rating, which is seriously impressive. Now that Sony has acquired Cinemersive Labs, I’m a little worried about what that means for Parallax. It was a really unique way for them to show off their technology when it launched in March 2025, and I hope Sony continues to support it!
