As a seasoned gamer and a lover of all things Nintendo, I must say that the witty dialogue and humor found within the world of “Mario & Luigi: Brothership” is nothing short of extraordinary. The game’s writers have truly outdone themselves by infusing each character with their unique personalities and clever one-liners.
Experiencing Mario’s voice for the first time in Super Mario 64 back in 1996 was an absolute delight. Since then, Mario has lent his voice to countless games, but his expressions through animations are often quite minimal. However, this is not the case in the Mario & Luigi series. Despite the limitations of the Game Boy Advance, the developers at AlphaDream managed to infuse a great deal of expression into both Mario and Luigi in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
In the game “Mario & Luigi: Brothership,” neither the characters speak in complete sentences, but instead communicate in a jumbled, pseudo-Italian manner similar to babbling. However, compared to earlier versions, their facial expressions have improved due to the art style becoming more anime-like. Despite no one else talking in the game, it still contains some excellent dialogues, though beware of spoilers as we delve into our analysis of the best lines.
8 “Exstinker Corps.”
Zokket
- Location: Great Lighthouse Island
In the game, Zokket serves as the primary antagonist, whose true identity remains hidden until the final act. For the first time, they and their minions, known as the Extension Corps (or Exstinker Corps, as he prefers), are encountered on Great Lighthouse Island. Characters like Ecks, Shun, and Ten may refer to themselves by this title, but Zokket pays no mind to their names. Instead, they find amusement in derisive nicknames such as calling the minions “Exstinker Corps” or mockingly referring to Mario as “Snore-io” and Luigi as “Too-easy”. In RPGs, memorable villains don’t necessarily need a name to be effective.
7 “Idle!”
Allow, Dulles, Ireen, and Loog
- Location: Desolatt Island
Team Idle consists of Allow, Dulles, Ireen, and Loog. They are a heroic team within the game, resembling the Power Rangers with their fondness for poses, catchphrases, and color coordination. Initially encountered on Desolatt Island, they greet Mario and Luigi with their synchronized routine upon arrival. However, the brothers’ initial reaction was one of bewilderment, as they stood by, uncertain of how to respond to this exuberance, calling out “Idle!” in unison.
6 “Oh, Come On!”
Koopa Bros
- Location: Skorcheen Island
In the game, players primarily encounter Zokket and his gang of associates. But around midway, they’ll come across foes that they might recognize, as Bowser also intends to seize control of this fresh territory. An instance occurs on Skorcheen Island where players meet three Koopa Bros., each dressed in colors similar to their counterparts in the Mario & Luigi: Brothership.
Initially, I approach Mario and Luigi with cordial motives, claiming they’re on a mission to locate their chief, Bowser. I bid them farewell, wishing them luck, but then I subtly taunt them as if they were cowards backing down from a battle. It’s a clever ruse.
5 “Orally!”
Vulko
- Location: Shipshape Island
In the game, Vulko serves as one of the village leaders on the islands with both fire and ice. Near the end of the storyline, Zokket begins contaminating people using harmful energy, even affecting the prince of the ice tribe, Chilliam. To remedy his affliction in “Mario & Luigi: Brothership”, Vulko force-feeds a peculiar, turnip-like plant shaped like a heart to Chilliam, exclaiming that it’s the only way to heal him through his mouth. This line is one of the oddest in the game, and even the inhabitants of Shipshape Island are taken aback. Despite its bizarre nature, this vegetable indeed cures Chilliam, and it plays a significant role in the plot as time progresses.
4 “I Have No Data On That.”
Technikki
- Location: Great Lighthouse Island
Another exciting sequence unfolds involving Team Idle’s young members, who daringly decide to infiltrate the second fortress on Great Lighthouse Island using a vessel resembling a rockstar’s ship. Their creator, Technikki, expresses doubts about their plan’s success and safety, but these miniature heroes are determined to make a difference. Despite the potential risks, they press on. When an accident occurs, there ensues a comical death scene reminiscent of anime. Following Peach’s concern for their wellbeing, Technikki responds with a technical response. To be clear, in this game, these kids do not meet their end as characters in a Super Mario title.
3 “Wilma!”
Hotel Director
- Location: Lottacoins Island
In my gaming world, I’ve encountered quite a few NPCs, but Wilma from Rumbla Island stands out. She’s the head honcho over there, known for their exceptional rock art creations. There’s a certain notoriety surrounding her, as later in the game, there’s this side quest called The Courier that somehow ties back to her.
The Lottacoins Island hotel manager requests that they deliver a package without being observed. Upon delivery, the plumbers and the manager’s assistant inspect it, discovering that the package contained a statue of Wilma. Impressed by its beauty, the manager gushes over it extravagantly, even exclaiming her name with fervor reminiscent of Fred Flintstone shouting “Wilma!” in the animated series, The Flintstones.
2 “Did You Wash Your Hands?”
Ten
- Location: Slippenglide Island
Scenes featuring the mentioned Extension Corps are brimming with amusing dialogue. One particularly funny moment occurs near the end, where Mario and Luigi find themselves collecting Bond energy from powerful groups. When they run into the Extension Corps, one of its members, Ecks, is seen in the restroom. It’s suggested he didn’t wash his hands, leading Ten to make Shun step aside in line for a bonding ritual involving hand-holding. Ten was hesitant about holding Ecks’ hand, as it wasn’t clear if it had been properly cleaned. This was a risk that he chose not to take.

- Location: Soli-Tree
Mario & Luigi: Brothership embodies the essence of a standalone game, much like the critically acclaimed title Death Stranding. To put it simply, Mario & Luigi: Brothership revolves around the importance of bonds, while its main antagonist, Reclusa, lacks any significant connections. Reclusa sought to dismantle the world due to resentment towards relationships, considering them foolish. However, just as Connie corrects this misconception on the brink of Reclusa’s final disappearance following the climactic battle, she reminds us that we are stronger together than alone, providing a valuable life lesson for our everyday experiences.
