Sony has raised the price of its PS5 consoles again, marking the second increase in less than a year. The first price hike last August was linked to tariffs, but this April’s increase is due to a shortage of DRAM, a type of computer memory, caused by high demand from AI companies like OpenAI. This shortage has significantly driven up the cost of RAM and other key parts. As a result, the PS5 Slim with a disc drive now costs $649, up from $549, and the PS5 Pro has jumped to $899, a substantial increase from its previous price of $749.
PS5 Buyers Should Look to Costco Bundles to Save Money
Despite recent price increases, it’s still possible to find a PlayStation 5 at a reasonable cost. One Reddit user shared that Costco stores haven’t fully reflected Sony’s price hike from April 2nd. They posted a picture showing a PS5 Slim with a disc drive and an extra DualSense controller for $599. Given the PS5 Slim usually costs around $550 and controllers are typically $70-$75, this Costco bundle offers good value. The PS5 Pro bundled with a controller is also available for $800, which is a good price considering the recent increase. These deals are only available to Costco members, and memberships start at $65 a year.
The deals Yassermasood shared are similar to offers Costco has been running throughout 2025. It’s important to remember these prices are for bundles, not individual consoles sold elsewhere. Others noted that Sam’s Club, Costco’s main competitor, is still selling the PS5 Pro and Slim at their original prices. Even with Sony recently increasing prices, the current shortage of RAM might mean the PS5 will stay popular for longer, potentially leading to more bundle deals for retailers.
As a Costco fan, I know they have two main membership options. The Gold Star membership is $65 a year, which is great if you just want basic access. Then there’s the Executive membership at $130 a year, offering extra perks. No matter which one you choose, you get two membership cards. When you go to sign up in person, they’ll need your membership number (they send that by email) and a photo ID, like a driver’s license, to issue your cards.
The PS5’s Price Hike Could Be a Bellwether For the PS6
The current price of the PS5 might give us a clue about how expensive the upcoming PS6 will be. Reports suggest it costs around $760 to make a PS6, and Sony is considering a slightly lower cost of $699 with subsidies. Since consoles always sell for more than it costs to make them, the PS6 could end up costing over $1,000 – similar to Microsoft’s Project Helix Xbox.
