The Worst Sonic Characters Of All Time

The upcoming theatrical release featuring Amy and Metal Sonic in Sonic 4 further solidifies Sonic the Hedgehog’s place as a gaming icon. This news comes at an exciting time, coinciding with the franchise’s 35th anniversary in 2026. We can expect even more to come, including crossovers with Godzilla and DC Comics, and the possibility of a significant new game announcement.

If a new Sonic game is made, familiar faces like Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and even Dr. Robotnik could join Sonic on his next adventure. Staying true to the series’ history might also include brief or recurring appearances from other characters. However, the franchise has introduced a lot of new characters since Sonic first appeared in 1991, and some of them haven’t been well-received. Certain characters were either unpopular or didn’t fit the Sonic universe, which ultimately hurt how fans perceived the games they were in.

7. E-100 Series

Robots Betraying Eggman Have Never Been More Cliché

  • Sonic Adventure

No villain is complete without helpers, and Doctor Eggman gets that from his Badniks. He’s always creating stronger versions to fight Sonic, and the E-100 Series are some of those – tougher, more advanced robots powered by animals. However, out of all of them, only two (or three if you include the comic books) really stood out and became memorable.

There are two E-100 Series robots with particularly notable stories. E-102 Gamma had a heartbreaking fate, forced to fight and destroy its own robotic siblings to protect the animals they were holding captive. E-123 Omega, on the other hand, resented Dr. Eggman for not utilizing its full capabilities. Overall, the E-100 Series didn’t make a significant impact, appearing in only three games – two of which were simply different versions of Sonic Adventure. Interestingly, Omega stood out as an antihero alongside Shadow and Rouge in Team Dark, but his connection to the E-Series wasn’t really emphasized.

This presents a problem. – E-102

6. Gemerl

Emerl Was Already The Bad Bot Turned Good

  • Sonic Advance 3

In Sonic Battle, Sonic and his friends appear in a fighting game where a key feature is Emerl, a robot that learns moves by battling others. After being rescued from Dr. Eggman, Emerl becomes a hero and sacrifices itself to save the world. The story continues in Sonic Advance 3, where Eggman uses Emerl’s data to create Gemerl, a robot resembling Emerl but working alongside him to take over the world.

As a huge Sonic fan, I’ve been thinking about Gemerl, and honestly, he gives off major Metal Sonic energy. It actually makes me think he could be a way better villain in the game! Especially since he ends up betraying Eggman towards the end – Metal Sonic does that all the time! And it’s so predictable – Sonic Advance 3 just repeats the same story beat where the bad robot gets reprogrammed to be good. It happened with Emerl, and honestly, it feels like every evil robot plot goes that way!

5. Sonic The Werehog

An Unnecessary Transformation For Sonic

  • Sonic Unleashed

The 2006 game Sonic the Hedgehog tried to restart the series for 3D gaming, but some players wished it had focused more on classic, fast-paced platforming. So, with Sonic Unleashed, the developers really changed things up. The game features daytime stages where Sonic can run at incredible speeds in both 2D and 3D environments. But at night, Sonic transforms into something completely different: the Werehog.

Doctor Eggman steals the Chaos Emeralds from Super Sonic, draining their power and using that energy to revive Dark Gaia on Earth. This process not only renders the Emeralds useless but also transforms Sonic into a creature called the Werehog at night. The Werehog is slower and more powerful than Sonic’s usual form, changing the nighttime levels into combat-focused stages with puzzles. While intended to add variety, the Werehog’s awkward controls and departure from the fast-paced gameplay that defines Sonic contributed to the generally negative response to Sonic Unleashed.

You’ve really… gone and done it this time, Eggman. – Sonic

4. The Deadly Six

Looked Nothing Like Sonic Characters

  • Sonic: The Lost World

In Sonic: The Lost World, Sonic and Tails reluctantly team up with Doctor Eggman to fight the Deadly Six, alien creatures who have settled on a planetoid. The Deadly Six plan to use Eggman’s technology to become all-powerful. Led by the powerful and clever Zavok, they possess unique abilities. While they act as the game’s villains, the Deadly Six unfortunately don’t add anything meaningful to the Sonic universe’s story.

Although the Deadly Six seem to draw inspiration from Japanese demons called oni, their appearance doesn’t fit with the overall look of the Sonic games. Despite being unusual, their designs are actually more cartoonish than Sonic and his friends’ already exaggerated bodies. Because of their bland personalities and strange designs, the Deadly Six just didn’t resonate with fans.

As Zor would say, “How pointless.” – Zavok

3. The Storybook Characters

Could Have Perfectly Been Other Sonic Characters

  • Sonic and the Black Knight

Beyond introducing the Werehog transformation, Sonic and the Black Knight sends Sonic to Camelot where he teams up with the wizard Merlina to fight a corrupted King Arthur, who has become the Black Knight. While the game adds sword-fighting to Sonic’s usual speed, the biggest surprise is the characters he meets – they’re all based on people Sonic already knows. However, there’s no real explanation for why these characters are connected in this way.

Sonic asks a blacksmith, designed after Miles “Tails” Prower, to sharpen his sword. He then battles several knights based on other characters: Lancelot (inspired by Shadow), Gawain (based on Knuckles), and Percival (modeled after Blaze). Finally, he encounters the Lady of the Lake, who resembles Amy Rose. Although the knights’ armor looked good, the characters themselves felt like they were just there to provide mandatory battles in the game.

2. Chris Thorndyke

A Sora Clone Who’s Half Tails And Half Amy

  • Sonic X

Fans of Sonic often credit Sonic X with giving the franchise’s diverse characters and storylines a cohesive structure, largely thanks to the introduction of Chris Thorndyke, a human friend who lived with Sonic and his team while they were on Earth. Chris became heavily involved in Sonic’s adventures, and their friendship was central to many of the series’ plots. However, some felt that Chris’s presence was ultimately unnecessary.

Chris has a striking resemblance to characters from popular games – he looks like both Sora from Kingdom Hearts and Ash from Pokemon. His personality is also a blend of traits from Tails and Amy. It’s become a running joke that Chris is actually closer to Sonic than Tails is, and he often seeks Sonic’s attention – even more so than Amy, who was originally designed to be a devoted Sonic fan – and he’s known to cry quite a bit.

1. Princess Elise The Third

Had A Very Odd Relationship With Sonic

  • Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

In the 2006 game Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic and his friends find themselves protecting Princess Elise the Third and a powerful Chaos Emerald. They soon discover Elise holds a dangerous secret: she contains the destructive force known as Iblis. Throughout the game, Elise often needs rescuing, fitting the classic “damsel in distress” role. However, she later returns the favor when Sonic is killed by Mephiles, using the power of the Chaos Emeralds to revive him.

The weird thing about all of this? She kisses him at the end of her ritual.

I owe you everything. Now, let me repay the kindness. I don’t worry about my own fate, but please listen to me. Sonic, please come back… to me, to where we belong!

This moment confirmed the romantic feelings Elise had for Sonic, a development that many fans had already disliked because it felt like it promoted relationships between humans and animals. Her limited appearances after this – a brief cameo in Sonic Rivals 2 and just a mention in Shadow Generations – further damaged her standing, making her seem like a disposable character easily forgotten in the series.
