As a dedicated gamer who’s spent countless hours on both sides of the fence, I must say that the ongoing saga between Call of Duty and Battlefield is akin to a lifelong feud between neighboring towns, each vying for supremacy in the realm of first-person shooters.
For quite some time now, the “Call of Duty” series has been a dominating presence in the competitive first-person shooter genre, making it challenging for other intellectual properties to keep up with its consistent annual releases. Besides a handful of franchises, only “Battlefield” seems to have managed to hold its own against “Call of Duty,” being the most notable grounded military shooter that comes close to matching Activision’s series in terms of popularity and success.
Over time, games like Call of Duty and Battlefield have managed to coexist successfully due to distinct differences in their themes and gameplay styles. While Call of Duty often delivers intense, fast-paced arena shooter experiences that can feel claustrophobic, Battlefield offers a more realistic combat experience on expansive maps, with a greater emphasis on vehicle combat. However, this dynamic has shifted in recent years, as Call of Duty has started to mimic elements that have historically set Battlefield apart. Interestingly, the recent decision by Call of Duty to seemingly drop its Ground War mode seems to be beneficial for the upcoming Battlefield game.
Call of Duty May Have Allowed Battlefield to Maintain its Unique Multiplayer Approach
The competition between Call of Duty and Battlefield has been quite spirited historically, but currently, there’s a significant difference between the two series. Notably, Call of Duty set a new record with the launch of Black Ops 6, achieving its biggest opening weekend ever. On the other hand, the issues that have swirled around Battlefield 2042 since its release in 2021 have been hard for DICE to shake off, making it a challenging time for the franchise.
Devoted enthusiasts of either “Call of Duty” or “Battlefield” often show unwavering allegiance towards their preferred series. However, it’s important to note that there’s a substantial number of players who enjoy both these first-person shooter titans. With rumors suggesting a new “Battlefield” game due in 2025 and the usual annual release of a new “Call of Duty” installment, both franchises will need to emphasize distinct gaming experiences and strategies to grab the attention of this shared audience.
In the battle between “Call of Duty” and “Battlefield”, the former has stepped up its game in “Black Ops 6” with an open-world mission that’s been highly praised, suggesting that “CoD” might be getting the hang of bigger experiences like those “Battlefield” is famous for. However, this advance by “Call of Duty” was a blow to “Battlefield”, especially since “2042” doesn’t have a single-player campaign. Yet, there’s still an opportunity for “Battlefield” to preserve its unique identity.
A Lack of Ground War in Call of Duty’s Future Puts the Ball Back in Battlefield’s Court
Over the past few years, I’ve noticed how the Call of Duty series has been gradually expanding its horizons when it comes to larger-scale multiplayer experiences. This reached a peak with the introduction of Ground War mode, which has become a staple in the franchise’s core multiplayer offerings since 2019’s Modern Warfare. In essence, Ground War transformed into an official game mode from that point, also featuring in subsequent releases like MW2 and MW3. This epic battlefield pits two teams of 64 players against each other on specially designed massive maps, complete with squad spawning systems and vehicular combat for added excitement!
It was clear to many that Ground War in Black Ops 6 bore a strong resemblance to Battlefield’s core multiplayer experience, with both Call of Duty and Battlefield sharing the same type of gameplay. However, there’s been no mention of Ground War or any other large-scale modes for Black Ops 6, hinting that this mode may not appear in the anticipated 2025 Call of Duty set in the Black Ops universe. This means that next year’s Battlefield release could further perfect its large-scale experiences without competition from a similar offering in Call of Duty.
