As a seasoned Overwatch fan with years of gaming under my kilt, I couldn’t be more excited about the latest addition to the roster – Hazard! This rugged Scotsman with his muscular build and Scottish accent is just the right blend of brawn and banter that we’ve been craving.
The latest tank character in Overwatch 2 has been officially announced as Hazard. Being the 42nd and 13th tank hero added to Overwatch 2’s growing roster, he’s generating buzz due to his muscular physique, Scottish dialect, and ties with the Phreaks. Set to debut at the commencement of Season 14, there’s plenty to discover about this cyberpunk-like tank character.
Initially unveiled at BlizzCon 2023, the look of Hazard has undergone changes from his initial concept sketches. Gone are his spiky green locks, but his Hero Trailer, launched on November 19, showcased his brave demeanor, skills, and connections to other characters. As a potential Brawl tank, this exploration delves into the possible aspects of Hazard’s kit and backstory.
Overwatch 2’s Newest Tank Hero Is Hazard
Hazard’s Backstory And Affiliation With The Phreaks
Despite the trailer for Hazard’s debut being short, it corroborates earlier suggestions that Hazard and Moira share a connection through the vanadium isotope found in Moira’s lab. This isotope was first discovered by the Venture’s Wayfinder Society in Petra, then passed on to Oasis University for study. A sequence of events leads to its acquisition by Moira, prompting Hazard and the Phreaks to burglarize the Ministry of Genetics in search of a ferrofluid sample.
“Hazard and the Phreaks break into the Ministry of Genetics to steal a ferrofluid sample.”
To be honest, I don’t think the idea that the Phreaks are mutants resisting Moira’s lab experiments holds water. Instead, it seems that Hazard, despite his family struggling financially, managed to secure a spot at a top-notch school in Scotland. In a desperate attempt to cover tuition costs, he joined the military. Unfortunately, an Overwatch jet was shot down and crashed into a building, leaving Hazard trapped under the debris. This tragic accident resulted in him losing both legs and an arm, which were then replaced with advanced cybernetics. Even though Commander Morrison, also known as Soldier: 76, tried to console those affected, Hazard felt let down by the system and chose not to trust it anymore.
Later on, a mechanic from the criminal gang named the Phreaks adjusts his cybernetic upgrades. In search of a fresh start and a new sense of belonging, Hazard becomes a member of this group. Propelled by his ambition to overthrow the existing order, Hazard is portrayed in his hero trailer as administering vanadium into his cyborg systems, thereby gaining the necessary strength to breach security and make a daring escape alongside his comrades.
Hazard’s Potential Abilities
Based on the upcoming trial weekend for playtesting Overwatch 2‘s character Hazard from November 22 to November 25, it’s anticipated that Blizzard will soon disclose his skill set or “ability kit.” Previews of Hazard show him armed with an arm cannon, a scythe, and amethysts that are speculated to function as projectiles. Some players hypothesize that his ultimate ability might feature the rain of projectiles observed around 1:43 in the trailer, potentially transforming into an area-of-effect (AoE) ability that harms and pushes back any characters within its vicinity.
In terms of his potential role as a brawl tank, he might resemble other tanks in our roster. For instance, he has a leap attack like Doomfist, a melee combat skill similar to Reinhardt, and a slow-firing shotgun that mirrors Roadhog’s Scrap Gun. Given this description, it seems he excels in close-quarters fighting scenarios. Teams comprising Season 13’s tank compositions such as Brigitte and Juno could work well with him. Additionally, Lucio’s Speed Boost ability would likely prove quite beneficial for Hazard.
In Season 14, Hazard will become a permanent fixture in our team roster. Players should prepare for adjustments to Hazard’s uniform during both his trial period as a hero and when he officially joins the hero-shooter game. This character is set to debut on December 10, marking his arrival with Overwatch 2’s 6v6 playtests, the annual Winter Wonderland event, balance adjustments, and several other thrilling updates.
