The Dreamcast was one of the most fun consoles for people my age, particularly when you consider how much technology and creativity were evolving at the time it came out.
Every new game felt fresh and original, with developers brimming with ideas. Because the video game industry was still in its early stages, even simple concepts felt innovative, resulting in a wealth of amazing games.
I might be looking back with rose-colored glasses, but I truly believe the early years of this century offered a wealth of exciting stories that are still enjoyable and relevant now.
It’s always a good time to look back at the history of video games, so I’d like to share a list of ten fantastic Dreamcast games that are enjoyable right from the beginning.
10. Metropolis Street Racer
The Underrated King of Racing
It’s surprising how few people talk about Metropolis Street Racing, considering how impressive it was for its time. The game had a really polished and stylish look.
The game’s Kudos system immediately made aiming for precise driving incredibly rewarding. The controls were so well-designed that it felt natural to try and master them.
Metropolis Street Racing wasn’t a true-to-life simulation, nor was it a simple arcade game. It struck a great balance that immediately drew players in, especially as they unlocked new cars and racing locations.
Before the Project Gotham Racing series, this game was truly innovative for its time. While it might not have been fully appreciated initially, fans of the racing genre now recognize it as a classic.
9. Alient Front Online
War Against Humanity
Stories about aliens fighting humans are common in modern entertainment, but very few video games have had the same impact as Alien Front Online.
Even though I couldn’t play the game online because of my internet connection – and I suspect that would have made me love it even more – the single-player campaign was incredibly engaging, with amazing battles.
No matter which faction you played as, controlling any of the vehicles and engaging in such large-scale battles was stunning. The game featured impressive visuals and sound, beautiful environments, and distinct vehicles that made it fun to play again and again.
We’re all used to seeing planes in the sky, but it still feels amazing. While Alien Front Online wasn’t revolutionary, it was incredibly simple and fun – you couldn’t help but enjoy playing it.
8. Maximum Pool
Immaculate Vibes
My dad loves pool, so we had a table at home and played almost every week. We also bonded over watching the exciting documentary, Maximum Pool.
This game was truly exceptional, offering a captivating soundtrack you could listen to endlessly, a variety of game modes for any sports fan, and gameplay that realistically captured the feeling of the real thing.
While pool isn’t featured in many modern video games, often limited to simple online versions, Maximum Pool was a standout title that truly captured the sport and pleased its fans.
If you’re not a fan of pool to begin with, this game will either get you hooked and wanting to play in person, or it will be enjoyable enough to keep you playing virtually.
7. Mortal Kombat Gold
Visceral Pleasure
Everyone remembers the first Mortal Kombat game they played, and for me, that was Mortal Kombat Gold. It really stuck with me.
Okay, so this was the first game in the series to hit the newer consoles, and honestly, you could really see the difference. The graphics were way better, but more than that, the gameplay felt so much more intense and addictive than anything before it. The combat just felt more real and satisfying.
The game’s twenty characters, each with their own unique look and fighting style, immediately grabbed my attention. That excitement continued as I played with friends and worked to unlock everything the game had to offer, especially through the challenging Tower mode.
Wow, Mortal Kombat Gold was seriously incredible! The fighting moves were amazing, it looked fantastic, and the special effects were unlike anything I’d seen at the time. As a kid, I could play that game for hours and hours – it was just non-stop fun and really set the standard for fighting games back then.
6. Confidential Mission
A Perfectly Adapted Arcade
I really enjoyed seeing how Dreamcast games stacked up visually against their arcade counterparts, and Confidential Mission was always a prime example of a successful adaptation.
Whether or not you used the light gun, controlling agents Howard Gibson and Jean Clifford was incredibly empowering. The game transported you to exciting places, pitted you against scary foes, and kept you on the edge of your seat, making you feel truly vulnerable.
This game was a challenging shooter, featuring action-packed scenes reminiscent of popular thrillers. The boss battles were especially difficult, demanding a high degree of accuracy and strategic thinking that few modern games can match.
The game is quite brief, but a big part of the fun in Confidential Mission comes from replaying it and trying to improve your best scores. It’s even more enjoyable when you play with a friend and compete to see who can shoot the most accurately.
5. Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X
The Most Vivid Zombie Terror
Man, playing Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X was a total rollercoaster. It genuinely messed me up a few times with how intense it was, but honestly, it was one of the most fun survival horror games I’ve ever played. It really stuck with me!
If someone believes this is the best game in the series, that’s a valid opinion, and they shouldn’t be criticized for it. In fact, I suspect a lot of people would say it’s one of the strongest examples of what makes the series great.
This game delivers a fantastic experience with its captivating story, impressive graphics for its era, and striking gothic atmosphere. Like the original Resident Evil, it features dynamic camera work, clever puzzles, and a demanding but rewarding system for managing resources – truly a standout title.
Okay, so this game wasn’t instantly amazing for me – it took a bit to really get into it. But once it did click, wow! It’s just so much fun that I absolutely had to include it on my list. I couldn’t leave it out!
4. Jet Set Radio
Stylization Made Video Game
As a huge fan, I can honestly say that Jet Set Radio on the Dreamcast is one of the most original games I’ve ever played. It really stands out from everything else, even today!
The game is captivating thanks to its focus on fluid movement, creative platforming, vibrant graffiti, and unique style. Its beautiful cel-shaded graphics and incredible music create an immersive experience that might even spark a newfound appreciation for art.
Whether you loved the unique characters and art style, were drawn in by the music, or just enjoyed skating and tagging around the city, Jet Set Radio is remarkably quick at showing you how great it is.
Even after many years and numerous attempts to recreate it, Smilebit’s game from the 2000s remains unmatched. In fact, it hasn’t really needed a successor, as it still looks and plays remarkably well today.
3. Crazy Taxi
Madness at Full Speed
It’s hard to think of many games that are as much fun as Crazy Taxi. It’s genuinely one of the most entertaining games out there.
This game really shows how a strong core idea can make all the difference. The concept of playing a taxi driver pushing the limits to beat impossible time goals – even if it means endangering pedestrians – is surprisingly clever and engaging.

The game’s stunning visuals and sound really enhance its wonderfully bizarre world. However, the core of its appeal lies in its fast-paced, arcade-style gameplay, which is incredibly fun and easily keeps you entertained for hours.
Similar to Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi is a game deeply rooted in its era, and trying to recreate it wouldn’t work – it just doesn’t hold up over time. Actually, if I had to pick one, I’d argue that Crazy Taxi actually improves with age.
2. The House of the Dead 2
A Cooperative Without Parallels
Imagine everything you loved about Confidential Mission – now picture that with a thrilling zombie theme and some incredibly fun, difficult boss battles. That’s The House of the Dead 2, a classic light gun shooter.
This arcade game’s fast-paced, on-rails shooting, diverse enemies, and varied environments made it a standout experience on the Dreamcast – and that’s high praise considering how many amazing games were available for the system.
This game was incredibly fun to play with friends, mostly because of the satisfying challenge of finishing it. But even after beating the game, we all wanted to keep playing and enjoying its exciting gameplay.
Beyond its great graphics and plenty of frightening moments, The House of the Dead 2 is a truly captivating game that everyone should try, and it’s also one of the most fun games ever made.
1. Sonic Adventure 2
The Peak of the Blue Hedgehog
I’m not a huge Sonic fan, but I definitely think Sonic Adventure 2 is a really important game, especially for people who grew up playing SEGA consoles. Even if it seems a little much to say, it was a standout title.
No matter if you preferred the game’s deep and diverse story mode, filled with interesting characters, levels, and ways to play, or enjoyed the multiplayer with friends, this game always kept you entertained.
The game’s thrilling speed and perfectly matched music created an incredibly enjoyable experience that was hard to find in other games, even those made by the same developers.
I know this game isn’t very popular, and many people think it’s not as good as the last one, but I truly believe it’s gotten a bad rap.
When it comes to fun, Sonic Adventure 2 is a fantastic game, and it remains my favorite from the Dreamcast. Even after all these years, I still love playing it, which speaks volumes about how good it is.
