These shows gained huge international followings with their incredible worlds and captivating stories. However, Shonen isn’t the only genre with great anime – Isekai also offers a wealth of fantastic series.
I’ve always loved Isekai, and while it hasn’t quite reached the same popularity as something like Shonen, I’m really seeing that change! Series like Mushoku Tensei are just incredible and are helping Isekai gain the recognition it deserves. If you’re looking to jump in, I’ve put together a list of some fantastic Isekai shows you can stream right now on Crunchyroll!
The Devil Is a Part-Timer!
If you’re looking for a great anime on Crunchyroll, check out The Devil is a Part-Timer. It has a really unique idea and expertly balances humor with exciting action, quickly drawing you in. From the moment it starts, you’ll find yourself captivated by its funny and charming world, filled with well-developed characters. Despite the title, it’s surprisingly lighthearted and cute!
The story of The Devil is a Part-Timer follows Satan, the demon lord, who is unexpectedly forced to live a normal life in modern Tokyo. This is the result of a battle with Emilia Justina, a hero who defeated him on his home planet, Ente Isla. Now going by the name Sadou Maou, Satan gets a job at a fast-food restaurant to support himself. His devoted general, Ashiya, joins him to help him adjust to the human world. Meanwhile, Emilia also arrives in Tokyo, disguised as a human, to monitor her defeated enemy – who is surprisingly enjoying his new life.
Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy
Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy stands out in the Isekai genre with its compelling story, well-developed characters, and immersive world. The main character, Makoto, is incredibly powerful but remains relatable and down-to-earth, a refreshing change from typical overpowered protagonists. Despite its strengths, the series hasn’t gotten the recognition it deserves, often overshadowed by more action-packed shows. Perhaps it’s time for that to change and give this gem the attention it deserves.
The anime follows Makoto Misumi, a high school student unexpectedly transported to another world to fulfill a hero’s destiny. Unfortunately, the goddess who made the original agreement with his father doesn’t find him appealing and turns him away. Makoto then unlocks surprising abilities and teams up with creatures who aren’t human, ultimately forging his own unique journey in a world that initially rejected him.
My Next Life As a Villainess
If you’re bored with typical isekai anime where the main character is incredibly powerful, you should definitely check out My Next Life As a Villainess. It perfectly embodies the otome isekai genre, delivering a hilarious and engaging story focused on its characters. While the series is excellent for many reasons, the most standout feature is its clever premise: the story is told from the perspective of the villainess!
My Next Life As a Villainess follows Catarina Claes, a noblewoman who is reborn as the villainess in a dating sim game she once played. Knowing her fate – either exile or death – Catarina tries to rewrite the story, using her sweet but naive personality to change the outcome.
The Rising of the Shield Hero
The Rising of the Shield Hero is a compelling story about a hero who faces betrayal and prejudice, but refuses to be defeated. This anime is packed with powerful drama and meaningful character development that will stay with you long after you’ve finished watching. While many stories focus on swordsmen or fighters, this one uniquely centers around a shield wielder – and his journey to becoming a true hero.
The anime follows Naofumi Iwatani, a regular guy suddenly transported to another world as one of the Four Cardinal Heroes. Unlike the others, he only receives a shield as his weapon, leading people to underestimate him. Things take a turn for the worse when he’s wrongly accused of a crime, leaving him with nothing. I got completely sucked into Sword Art Online right from the first episode! It’s a really intense story, and it seriously elevates the whole isekai genre. If you’re at all familiar with isekai anime, you’ve definitely heard of Sword Art Online – it’s probably the most well-known one out there.
Even though it has flaws, Sword Art Online remains enjoyable because each story arc features new worlds, challenges, and gameplay elements, preventing it from becoming repetitive. The beautiful animation and music also greatly enhance the experience. More importantly, unlike many action-focused anime, this series prioritizes the characters’ internal and external conflicts, exploring their emotional, physical, and mental hardships.
The story is set inside a video game where 10,000 players, including the main character Kazuto “Kirito” Kirigaya, find themselves unexpectedly trapped. A terrifying rule applies: if you die in the game, you die in real life. The only way to escape is to reach the 100th level. Kirito quickly becomes a skilled player, making friends and eventually falling in love with Asuna, a strong and talented player. Their relationship is central to the story’s events.
Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation
I’ve been really impressed with Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. The fantasy world it creates is stunning, and the animation is truly top-notch – people have even been comparing it to shows like Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer over the years. What really stands out is the main character’s journey; it’s not just about where he goes, but about how he grows as a person, emotionally and psychologically. Stories like this really connect with viewers, and if you’re looking for something a little different from the usual isekai anime, I’d definitely recommend checking it out. The world feels so detailed and alive, it’s a truly immersive experience.
Mushoku Tensei tells the story of a 34-year-old man who is reborn as a baby after a tragic accident. Now named Rudeus Greyrat, he finds himself in a magical new world. What sets this reincarnation story apart is that Rudeus remembers his previous life, but actively chooses to leave his past mistakes behind, hoping to live a life free of regrets.
KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!
If you need a pick-me-up, check out KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! It’s a hilarious anime that stands out from other “isekai” shows. While many focus on a powerful main character, KonoSuba prioritizes comedy. We won’t spoil the jokes, but trust us – it’s genuinely funny and one of the most entertaining isekai anime you‘ll find.
I watched the story of Kazuma Satou unfold, and it’s quite a ride. He died in a pretty silly way and was unexpectedly transported to a fantasy world. Before arriving, he was given the chance to bring one thing with him, and on a whim, he chose the goddess Aqua. What he thought would be an epic adventure quickly turned into hilarious chaos, and it’s incredibly funny to watch everything unfold.
Overlord
Overlord stands out in the isekai genre with a unique premise: instead of a heroic protagonist, it centers around a powerful villain. Ainz Ooal Gown, the main character, is incredibly compelling, and his strong leadership drives the story. The anime’s fantasy world is exceptionally well-crafted, but what truly sets it apart is its cast of truly memorable characters.

Re:Zero
Re:Zero stands out from other isekai anime because its story is both original and full of surprises, constantly leaving you wondering what will happen next. It doesn’t just focus on action; the series also deeply explores the characters’ inner struggles and emotions. The supporting characters are well-developed and important to the story, but Subaru is particularly engaging due to his humorous approach to even the most difficult circumstances.
I recently started watching Re:Zero, and it’s really grabbed my attention. The story centers around Subaru Natsuki, a regular guy who finds himself caught in a strange loop – whenever he dies, he gets sent back in time. It’s tough to watch him relive difficult experiences repeatedly, but he does it all to protect the people he cares about. If you’ve played Deathloop, the premise feels pretty similar. And now is a perfect time to start watching, because the fourth season of the anime is coming out on April 8th!
