First-person shooters have come a long way since the 1990s—they’re no longer just copies of Doom. Now you’ll find them blended with puzzle elements, role-playing adventures, scary survival games, and all sorts of other genres. These shooters, with their excellent gameplay and immersive worlds, are definitely worth checking out.
Fans still love playing Left 4 Dead 2 online, and it’s a fantastic example of multiplayer gameplay. Meanwhile, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare remains a high point for its campaign and shooting mechanics. While neither game is universally considered the greatest ever, both offer a lot of fun for first-person shooter fans, showcasing different styles within the genre.

Halo: Reach
Master Chief Is Not The Only Star In This Universe
While the first Halo remains the strongest game in the series, Halo: Reach is a fantastic follow-up that doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. It successfully showed that the Halo universe could deliver a great story even without focusing on Master Chief, all while maintaining the series’ signature excellent gameplay.
I always loved how Halo: Reach let you customize your Spartan with cool upgrades like a sprint or even a jetpack – it really changed how you played missions. But it wasn’t just the action; the bond between the Spartans was amazing, and the ending was just epic. Honestly, it’s a Halo game that’s stuck with me ever since, and one I’ll always remember.
Resident Evil Requiem
Going To Graceland
While not the most action-packed shooter available, the shooting mechanics in Resident Evil Requiem are surprisingly good for a Resident Evil game. Players can choose to play as Grace or Leon in either third-person or first-person view, and both options offer unique benefits. It’s noticeably easier to shoot zombies – especially headshots – with weapons like pistols, shotguns, and rifles compared to earlier Resident Evil games, particularly when aiming down the sights.
Grace’s part of the game leans into the classic, suspenseful style of survival horror, while Leon’s sections deliver the fast-paced action that shooter fans will love. Ultimately, this ninth main installment shows that Resident Evil is still a thrilling experience.
Borderlands 2
Diablo With Guns
Even after many years, Borderlands 2 remains a fantastic game because it expertly blends exciting action with a compelling story. Handsome Jack is arguably the best villain in the Borderlands series, largely due to his memorable and charismatic – though often inappropriate – lines.
Borderlands 2 has more playable classes added after its release than any other game in the series, giving players a reason to return and explore new ways to play. It delivers a highly engaging and addictive experience, whether you’re playing solo or with a team of up to four players, centered around collecting loot and shooting your way through challenges.
Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
All Perspectives Of War
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare revitalized the Call of Duty series, and its success is well-known. Many fans particularly remember the game’s multiplayer mode, which kept them engaged with a rewarding progression system. Players were motivated to unlock new weapons, upgrades, and other content after each match.
The campaign remains a standout feature, largely due to its diverse and engaging set pieces – you’ll switch between tasks like manning turrets and taking long-distance shots. Even now, the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare holds up remarkably well and is a true masterpiece, arguably even better than the remake.
Portal 2
The Most Enthralling Puzzle Game Around
Portal 2 is more of a puzzle game than a traditional shooter. While you might encounter a turret here and there, the focus is on solving puzzles and navigating through test chambers and abandoned environments. You’ll primarily use the Portal Gun, which creates interconnected portals that allow you to progress.
The game features clever puzzles that give players a satisfying feeling of accomplishment after each challenge. It also cleverly mixes feelings of loneliness with funny moments, thanks to the return of GLaDOS, the witty AI from the original game – but this time, she’s stuck inside a potato!
Left 4 Dead 2
Terror Time In The Bayou
Left 4 Dead 2 is a good shooter for anyone looking for something more bite-sized compared to the lengthy campaign of something like Borderlands 2. Each stage is a sprawling mission that starts in one area and winds up in another by the end, like going from a hotel to a mall before getting free from the zombies.
Each mission challenges you and your team of four to survive waves of zombies, gather supplies to progress, and find weapons to fight them off. Whether you play a single round or a long series of missions, the feeling of teamwork and accomplishment after completing one is truly special.
Metroid Prime
A ShooterVania
While not as frightening as Resident Evil Requiem, Metroid Prime creates a strong sense of loneliness and atmosphere in this action-packed shooter. Players take on the role of Samus Aran, exploring a complex network of rooms and corridors within ancient ruins on a distant planet.
Players will battle insect-like enemies, overcome challenging puzzles, and discover improvements to their weapons and armor to unlock new parts of the game. Originally and brilliantly created for the GameCube, Metroid Prime remains a fantastic experience on that system, and it’s even better to play now thanks to the updated version available on Switch.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Hack The Planet
Deus Ex: Human Revolution brilliantly blends first-person shooting with stealth and role-playing game features. The game takes place in 2027 and puts you in the role of Adam Jensen, a cyborg security officer investigating crimes in cities around the world.
Players have complete freedom to create Adam, customizing him as a combat expert skilled in gunkata, or a stealthy ninja capable of sneaking or hacking through any security. No matter how you build Adam, Deus Ex: Human Revolution adapts, letting you tackle missions in a variety of ways.
Far Cry 3
Out Of Your Depths
In Far Cry 3, the game begins with a group of friends on vacation in the tropics who are unexpectedly kidnapped by pirates. One of them, Jason Brody, breaks free and embarks on a dangerous journey to rescue his friends.
In Far Cry 3, the main character, Jason, transforms from a party-goer into a dangerous fighter surprisingly fast. If you can accept this shift, you’ll likely enjoy the game. It’s an open-world shooter packed with action – you can capture enemy bases, discover powerful weapons, steal vehicles, and experience the wild, unpredictable struggle for survival.
Red Faction
Simply Blow It Up
Red Faction is a beloved PlayStation 2 shooter. While it might not be as polished as Halo: Combat Evolved, it stands out for its incredible destruction mechanics. Unlike most shooters of the time, Red Faction lets you blast through walls and reshape the environment with everything from grenades to pistols, creating new paths and tactical advantages.
The game’s science fiction setting on Mars, its depiction of a controlling, oppressive government, and the creative weapons all made a lasting impression on PlayStation players. Fortunately, Red Faction is still available today thanks to a version released for the PS4, meaning you don’t need an older PS2 console to play it.
