Major spoilers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ahead!
I was really surprised by The Super Mario Bros. Movie. I expected to like it – I grew up playing Mario games and have a lot of fond memories of the Mushroom Kingdom. But I’ve realized not all Mario content is made for adults like me; it often prioritizes younger viewers. The first movie felt perfectly geared towards kids just discovering Mario, which is how I felt when I was their age. However, The Super Mario Bros. Movie gave me something unexpected: it let me relive my childhood for an hour and a half. The music brought back so many memories, and the clever use of cameos and familiar elements from the games was fantastic. The only thing that would have made it even better was sharing the experience with my dad.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie delivered exactly what fans were hoping for. As a kid, Super Mario was my ultimate escape, and I, like many others, found comfort and connection in its colorful worlds. This movie captures that same feeling of joyful immersion, and it does so with more assurance than the first film. It understands that audiences want dazzling visuals, plenty of Easter eggs, and those exciting moments of recognition when familiar elements appear. This installment felt different, though – like a stepping stone towards something even bigger and more surprising.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Feels Like a Smash Bros. Audition Tape
This movie definitely prioritized action, maybe even more than it needed to. While I did enjoy it, the film was packed with over-the-top set pieces and intense fights that reminded me a lot of the video game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It was fun to see even characters like Princess Peach performing moves that seemed directly inspired by her Smash abilities. Once I noticed that, it became clear the movie was appealing to fans of Smash on a deeper level.
Star Fox Showing Up Was the “Oh, We’re Doing This” Moment
Marketing made it clear Fox McCloud would appear in the film, but seeing him actually in the movie still felt unexpected. With Glen Powell voicing the character, there was a risk he’d feel forced or unnecessary. However, he fit into the story surprisingly well. While his interactions with Mario and the other characters could have been explored further, his appearance was successful enough to signal one thing: more characters from other franchises could join the adventure. And that possibility definitely raises some interesting questions.
The Cameos Started Feeling Like a Roll Call
I eventually stopped predicting if new characters would appear and started anticipating who they’d be. Seeing characters like R.O.B. and Mr. Game & Watch wasn’t just a treat for fans; it cleverly hinted at a connected universe. Those unfamiliar with Smash might have missed these quick cameos, but for those who knew the game, each appearance was a huge moment. At my theater, the crowd went wild with every reveal. It’s rare to get that kind of enthusiastic reaction now unless a movie is referencing something much larger than itself.
The Post Credits Scene…
I’m used to watching movies all the way through the credits, so I waited until the very end. When the reveal I’d been hoping for finally happened, I had a couple of thoughts.
- “Princess Daisy is joining the cast!”
- “She’s so beautiful! They kept her darker skin tone from before Mario Party 4!
- “Luigi will finally get his partner!”
- “Oh, we are definitely getting a Smash movie now!”
Growing up, I always loved Princess Daisy, so I was thrilled to see her join the cast! It felt like a classic move for this series – they’re clearly doing well and building things up slowly with new characters and storylines. It’s definitely setting the stage for more to come, a classic tease for a sequel.
Masterhand, We’ve Got a Problem With the Smash Bros. Movie
It’s a major issue that needs to be addressed: securing the rights to all the characters for a potential Smash movie. Here’s the current situation:
- Mario lives under Universal and Illumination.
- The live-action Legend of Zelda movie is in the works with Sony.
- There’s also the non-Nintendo characters, who present a double-whammy of issues. But in terms of strict movie rights:
- Sonic is over at Paramount.
- Minecraft’s Steve is with Warner Bros.
A Super Smash Bros. movie featuring characters from all the different game worlds would be incredibly complicated due to licensing issues. So, if a movie does get made, it will likely begin with a smaller scope, perhaps focusing on characters primarily from Nintendo games to establish a solid base.
I Didn’t Expect The Mario Galaxy Movie to Work, Which Is Why I Think The Smash Bros. Movie Might
I went into this movie expecting to like it, being a Mario adaptation, but I was surprised by how much I actually loved it. I now really want everyone to see it! This movie shows that Nintendo is learning what it takes to make a good adaptation: the story doesn’t need to be complicated, it can focus on exciting visuals, and it doesn’t need to be overly original. What matters most is that it feels like a heartfelt tribute to the source material, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie definitely delivers on that.
Honestly, I was skeptical about a Super Smash Bros. movie. It sounded like it could be a messy, over-the-top cash grab, and I wasn’t sure it would actually work. But this movie totally surprised me – it was good! Seeing how well this turned out makes me think a Super Smash Bros. Movie isn’t such a crazy idea after all. Now I’m really hoping I get to experience it with my dad if it ever happens.
