Very few games have gotten that perfect combination right, and those are the ones we still remember as the best Spider-Man games.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
A Movie Tie-In With Impeccable Movement
Even though it’s getting older, Spider-Man 2 is still a landmark superhero game. It was revolutionary for its time, finally bringing realistic, physics-based web-swinging to a Spider-Man game, letting you actually feel connected to the buildings as you swung around the city.
Unlike the original PlayStation games where Spider-Man swung from webs attached to the sky, this game had players connect webs to actual buildings throughout Manhattan. This seemingly small change drastically altered the gameplay. Swinging wasn’t just for show anymore; it became a skill players needed to learn and perfect, resulting in a feeling of speed and control that remains impressive even today.
The game was highly praised for successfully making players feel like Spider-Man, thanks to its expansive open-world New York City and the way crimes unfolded dynamically. Many still consider the 2004 game Spider-Man 2 to be the basis for all Spider-Man games that came after it. While some criticized the repetitive missions and pacing, it didn’t diminish the overall amazing experience.

The Start Of A Legacy
Marvel’s Spider-Man truly felt like a breakthrough. After many attempts, this game perfected the Spider-Man experience. Insomniac Games built on what worked in previous games, particularly the 2004 title, and updated it with more fluid movement, improved fighting, and a compelling story.
Moving around New York City as Spider-Man felt both easy and satisfying, offering a great mix of simple fun and complex challenges. But the game really stood out because of how it showed Peter Parker. It didn’t tell his origin story – instead, it focused on an already established Spider-Man grappling with the realities of being a hero, including his personal life and the impact of his choices. This created a story that felt more meaningful than most superhero games, all within a beautifully detailed city and with smooth, refined gameplay.
This game redefined what was possible for superhero games. It demonstrated that a game based on a licensed property could be just as good – and as expansive – as the biggest, most ambitious titles in the industry, a feat rarely achieved outside of the Batman: Arkham games.

A Formula That Keeps On Giving
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 takes everything players loved about the first game and makes it bigger and better. It features a larger world, more things to unlock, and plenty of new characters and suits. A key new feature is the ability to instantly switch between playing as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, which makes the gameplay more interesting and tells a richer story through both of their experiences.
Moving around the city and fighting have both been improved. New powers, quicker ways to get around, and bigger environments keep the action flowing. The symbiote is central to the experience, with its own unique upgrades and ways to change its appearance. This game builds on the strengths of the first one instead of trying to be completely different – and that’s exactly what fans wanted.
As a huge Spider-Man fan, I can confidently say that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is easily one of the best Spider-Man games ever created. Everyone seems to agree – the reviews are amazing, and so many people are playing it! What really stands out is how it feels like watching a Spider-Man movie, and the story really focuses on the characters, making it a truly special game.

While not every Spider-Man game is a masterpiece, many are incredibly well-loved and offer something special. They aren’t necessarily for everyone, but you might find exactly what you’re looking for in one of them.
Ultimate Spider-Man
Ultimate Spider-Man was visually striking thanks to its comic book-style presentation and unique art. The game stayed true to the source material and even let players control Venom, which significantly changed how the game played.
Even though it came after the highly popular Spider-Man 2, the game still felt great to play, especially when compared to other open-world games available then. It proved that the most fun part of any Spider-Man game is simply swinging around and exploring the city.
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows
I still think about this game all the time because of how much choice mattered. It wasn’t just a linear story – you actually got to decide how things played out! Plus, being able to switch between playing as classic Spider-Man and the awesome symbiote suit during combat was a total game-changer. It really made you feel like you were in control, which is something you just don’t get in most superhero games.
Fans really loved Spider-Man: Web of Shadows for its numerous cameos, creative boss battles, and the way the city changed throughout the game. While some critics found the combat and overall design a little basic, the story feels like an early version of what we later saw in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, making it worth playing again.
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions was unique because it let you play as several different Spider-Men from alternate universes. Each Spider-Man had a distinct way of playing, which made the game consistently engaging.
Because the game uses distinct levels instead of an open city, it doesn’t quite capture the feeling of being Spider-Man. However, it heavily influenced later stories, especially Into the Spider-Verse, and served as a foundation for many of the hero’s multiversal adventures.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
While a bit shorter than the 2018 game, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is just as polished and technically impressive. It tells a more intimate story, and its faster pace and special powers make it a truly unique experience.
While it would have been amazing as a main Spider-Man game, this title still proved Miles Morales is ready to share the spotlight as Spider-Man in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
Spider-Man And Venom: Maximum Carnage
If you love beat-’em-up games, Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage is definitely worth considering. It has all the elements that make the genre great, stays true to the comic books, and lets Spider-Man and Venom fight side-by-side.
The game isn’t particularly groundbreaking in terms of interactive gameplay, but it’s still a fun and enjoyable experience if you’re looking for some lighthearted action and a chance to fight bad guys.
