12 Best Risk of Rain 2 Mods You Need To Try

As a seasoned adventurer who’s braved the storms of Risk of Rain 2 for countless hours, I can confidently say that modding this game has transformed it into an entirely new experience. The sheer variety and creativity displayed by the community are nothing short of astounding.

Recently, Gearbox dropped the Seekers of the Storm update to Risk of Rain 2, which among other unwelcome additions, broke many legacy mods with the reworked codebase.

The optimal modifications for Risk of Rain 2’s current release have significantly evolved compared to what they were just a few months back.

“I’m going to divide this manual into several sections: First, there are mods designed for amusement or visual appeal; second, there are those that enhance the user experience, often referred to as ‘quality of life’ mods; and lastly, I’ll cover content mods.

Among the numerous humorous mods available on R2ModMan, I believe these form the essential foundation for an exceptional mod collection. (First person perspective: As a fan, I firmly believe that these mods are the cornerstone of a fantastic modpack.)

Visual and Silly Mods

This part focuses on mods that offer only aesthetic changes or amusement, with no impact on gameplay. These can be installed individually or included in a modpack, while keeping the installation a secret from your gaming companions.

These modifications span from cosmetic upgrades that provide a more streamlined look, to amusing sound effects for an entertaining journey to Petrichor V in a secure flight.

Lets Go Gambling SFX ModIf you’re looking for the silliest mod ever, this one makes it so whenever you come across a Shrine of Chance, pinging it will play the “Let’s Go Gambling” sound clip from the raxdflipnote video. It also changes the audio for winning or losing, and plays for everyone in a lobby, and it’s so funny.
StageAestheticThis mod gives you a taste of some brand-new looks for each stage, with all of them getting 2 or 3 different variants that look unique and interesting. It can be a bit abrasive at times, and some of the stage themes are a bit odd, but if you want variety, this is pretty great.
Custom Emotes API and BadAssEmotesThese mods work together, giving you a custom emote wheel. You can do just about any dance in Fortnite, as well as sillier ones, like the dumb Specialist dance from Persona 4 Dancing. It’s great, especially if you play with friends, and it’s bound to enhance the experience.
VerdantFallsReshadedVerdant Falls, by default, looks like Vaseline got smeared onto the screen, and I hate it. This just improves it by putting it in line with the rest of the stages, giving it that clean, cel-shaded look we all know and love, and it’s an absolute necessity while playing modern updates.
WolfoAlternateSkinsThis mod gives you 3+ skins for almost every character in the game, which includes a bevy of modded survivors, and what I love about it is that it doesn’t just hand these to you. These skins require you to go through an alternate ending to unlock them, which is a very neat idea, and the skins are cool, too.

Seekers of the Storm Improvements

Even though Gearbox is working diligently on improving the problematic DLC, the necessary changes and updates are still quite distant in the future. Consequently, we’re left with mods as our primary resource for adjustments such as balance tweaks, character overhauls, or even eliminating the most troublesome aspects of the game.

Mod NameDescription
KCCDownpatcherThis one is a bit more for the nerds who miss the pre-Seekers of the Storm speedrun skips, funny quirks about the physics, and the little details about how the game played. This mod restores that, and namely allows you to H0st skip once again, and I doubt Gearbox will add this stuff back in.
BetterChefPrimaryFor some reason, Chef’s cleaver goes out, stays in midair without doing any extra damage, and then makes you click again to recall it, which makes it feel kinda bad, and this mod fixes that. It lets you hold down the button and throw out a ton of cleavers, on top of buffing it nicely, making Chef much better.
RemoveTwisted and RemoveGildedThe absolutely unanimously hated, worst addition to Seekers of the Storm are the new Elite types, those being Twisted and Gilded elites, and both being awful to fight. Gildeds have massive health bars and steal your money, and Twisteds can kill you from all the way across the map, and these mods just remove both.
FalseSon Boss TweaksThe False Son boss was somehow simultaneously overwhelming and underwhelming, his laser dealing far too much damage and sometimes killing you in under a second, even after a loop. This mod nerfs his laser, normalizing the damage, and preventing him from moving while using it, which is a godsend.
SeekingItemReworksIf you’re just as disappointed by most Seekers of the Storm items as most people are, then this mod is a godsend. It fully reworks most items added by the DLC, with Antler Shield giving you armor and movement speed, War Bonds giving you free items, and Unstable Transmitter being usable. It’s great stuff.

Quality of Life

These modifications are designed to subtly adjust a few elements within the game, rather than introducing extensive features such as new levels, characters, or modes. Essentially, they enhance the gaming experience slightly while maintaining its core essence similar to the original version, with a handful of welcomed and noticeable improvements.

Mod NameDescription
LookingGlassThis mod does a ton, and if you hate the vague descriptions in this game, it’s a necessity. It gives you the full item description whenever you hover over or ping it, it tells you the stats like cooldowns and proc chance, and sorts your inventory automatically. You can also get a nice stat sheet on the side, if you want.
DropItemDrop Item lets you, get this: drop items. You can easily click on them when hovering over them in your inventory, instantly give them to other players in multiplayer, and it’s balanced enough to force you to keep Lunars and Debuffs. It’s quite a nice mod, and while I understand this feature not existing in vanilla is for balancing, it’s still fun.
Reduce RecyclerThis mod reduces the Recycler cooldown and is great for speedrunners or competitive players. The Recycler is a piece of great equipment, but that massive cooldown sucks, and this mod pretty much removes it, adding the cooldown to the timer instead. This means the game can get way harder faster, but you won’t slow down.
Actually FasterIf you’re a big fan of mashing, then this one is for you. It reduces the cooldown on things like shrines, printers and recyclers, and lets you get right back to whatever else you were doing. This mod just improves the pacing and is very funny when you get 5 failed shrine messages in chat in a row, on top of being satisfying.
ProperSaveIf you’ve ever been frustrated by Risk of Rain 2’s lack of a save system, then it is perfect for you. It’ll automatically save at the start of each level, so if your game crashes, or you just want to take a break, it’ll be right there when you get back. It also works wonders in Multiplayer, as an added little bonus.

Content

As a passionate gamer, you’ll often come across hilarious online posts showcasing creative modifications (mods) in popular games. These mods typically feature characters, levels, objects, relics, and even formidable adversaries. The exceptional ones offer a delightful mix of all these elements, ensuring an unparalleled gaming experience!

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve sifted through countless mods out there, but many of them lack the refinement that False Son offers, so I’ve handpicked the crème de la crème for my gaming experience.

DriverIf you’re a big fan of games where you pickup tons of different weapons and have to use whatever you can get, then Driver is the character for you. He gets special drops across the entire map just for him, all of them being unique and fun weapons, and he’s one of the most unique original characters I’ve ever seen added to the game.
PilotPilot is a fan-favorite character who’s been trapped in , and playing as him in Risk of Rain 2 is awesome. It’s still in beta, but what we’ve got makes for a really fun character. He can fly around on his parachute, rain fire from up above, and air stall for what feels like forever.
ZetAspectsAspects in Risk of Rain are typically super rare drops that give you varying and usually middling effects, while also stealing your Equipment slot. This changes that and makes them fun, on top of being cross-compatible with most mods that add new elites. They drop more frequently, can stack, and feel awesome to pick up.
AetheriumThis mod adds a heap of new items and artifacts, all of which mesh with the base game quite nicely. The items range from just getting more armor when you have shield, to an item with the longest description I’ve ever seen. The artifacts are cool shakeups, with randomized stages, meteor showers, or Blazing Mithrix.
Starstorm 2If you want a good update that adds cool characters, tons of new items, some new drones, a neat weather system, enemies, and an even higher difficulty, then this is the GOAT. It feels genuinely more polished than SoTS at times, the characters are unique and fun, and none of the items feel out of place or unbalanced.
