10 Roguelike Hidden Gems You Need To Play

10 Roguelike Hidden Gems You Need To Play

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve stumbled upon some truly extraordinary games that have managed to slip through the cracks of mainstream popularity. These hidden gems are often overlooked due to their unique concepts or lack of marketing, but they offer experiences that rival, and in some cases surpass, more well-known titles.

Over the past ten years or so, the Roguelike genre has largely been popularized by independent games. However, due to this reliance on indie developers, some games often slip into obscurity. Consequently, there are many enjoyable and well-crafted roguelikes that fail to receive the recognition they deserve.

I plan to highlight ten less-known but fantastic roguelike games, which didn’t receive significant attention or a large following like some of the more popular ones.

As a devoted gamer, I wholeheartedly affirm that the gameplay loops in these titles are just as gratifying as those found in Isaac’s and Gungeon. Their initial concepts are nothing short of intriguing.

10 Roboquest

Iconic, if a Little Unknown

10 Roguelike Hidden Gems You Need To Play

Roboquest may not be widely recognized, but it has consistently maintained a devoted fanbase who appreciate its intense, combat-oriented, and roguelike movement style as a shooter game.

It’s got awesome music, a slick style, and it feels incredibly good to move around enemy fire and shoot back at them.

This game has just about everything you could ask for, featuring multiplayer, high-octane action, and an electrifying atmosphere that sets it apart. It’s no surprise that it’s one of the favorites on this list, especially if you enjoy games like Borderlands, Risk of Rain 2, or DOOM. I wholeheartedly suggest giving it a try!

9 Peglin

Derivative but Delectable

10 Roguelike Hidden Gems You Need To Play

Peglin, while not as refined as Peggle, effectively transforms the engaging ball-dropping mechanic into an enjoyable roguelike RPG experience.

This unexpected blend is exceptionally effective, leaving you eager for more once you’ve ventured too near the radiant orb and risked too many bets.

The game heavily relies on randomness, resulting in an incredibly unpredictable roguelike adventure. This aspect decreases the level of skill required and allows for winning based on luck, but the thrill of a fantastic run remains exhilarating, particularly when you’ve mastered the game’s quirky mechanics.

8 Death Road to Canada

Survival of the Fittest

10 Roguelike Hidden Gems You Need To Play

A comedic take on survival horror, featuring familiar top-down action roguelike mechanics that have become characteristic of this genre.

Over the past eight years, I’ve primarily witnessed the game being played through old YouTube videos, and since then, it seems to have largely faded from popularity.

Unfortunately, it’s disappointing that we can’t continue playing together as the game remains popular, receiving regular updates featuring fresh characters, critical hits, and even fire extinguishers.

It’s an excellent opportunity for a road trip across the country, assemble a makeshift group of survivors, and guarantee the continuation of life for at least one of them.

7 (the) Gnorp Apologue

Randomized Idling

10 Roguelike Hidden Gems You Need To Play

Peeking briefly at the Gnorp Apologue may lead you to believe it’s an outdated, dull, leisurely activity, however, it offers a depth far beyond such initial impressions.

The game is remarkably swift, consistently providing fresh upgrades, and despite having a complete prestige system, it still offers the challenge of striving for improved timings in a roguelike setting. (or)

This seemingly simple game involves creating small characters who collide their heads against a large rock. However, as you delve into the gameplay, you’ll discover a comprehensive skill system and a wealth of content to explore.

Each time you complete a longer run, you are motivated to give it another go, and it offers an exhilarating blend of two styles.

6 Backpack Hero

Heard You Like Inventory Management

10 Roguelike Hidden Gems You Need To Play

If you’ve ever dreamed about experiencing Slay the Spire with a survival-horror-inspired inventory system that demands careful resource management, then Backpack Hero might just be the game for you.

This idea isn’t widely recognized or common, more like a special interest, but it carries an appealing allure, and engaging with it can be delightfully enjoyable.

It’s pleasant to acquire some effective weapons that won’t drain too much of your energy resources, and then bring them along while also making sure there’s room for protective gear and health supplies.

It’s a fun concept, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a very fun take on that roguelike RPG niche, as long as you don’t mind a little town-building.

5 30XX

An Even More Mega Man

10 Roguelike Hidden Gems You Need To Play

30XX, one of the rare platformer roguelikes I’m familiar with, significantly builds upon the foundation laid by Mega Man X, offering a unique, randomly generated gameplay that is nothing short of remarkable.

Every time I dive into this game, I’m always excited to discover fresh level designs, a mix of unexpected upgrades, and some truly awesome boss fights!

This game hasn’t gained much popularity beyond a small circle of speedrunners, hardcore Mega Man enthusiasts, and around 2000 Steam reviewers. It’s not well-known to most people.

Regrettably, it’s unfortunate that this game stands out so distinctly within its genre, as it’s truly worth recommending, regardless of whether or not you’ve experienced Mega Man X before.

4 Picayune Dreams

Makes Touhou Look Tame

10 Roguelike Hidden Gems You Need To Play

If the idea of merging ‘bullet hell’, ‘bullet heaven’, and ‘roguelike’ genres to create an unparalleled, mind-boggling gaming experience has ever crossed your mind, then let me introduce you to a game that perfectly fits your imagination.

In Picayune Dreams, you navigate through a world featuring randomly generated landscapes, foes, and power-ups. As you dodge relentless barrages from enemies, you also dispatch your own attacks.

Playing this game seems like a thrilling blend of Vampire Survivors and Touhou, offering an unpredictable gaming experience that’s further enhanced by its breakcore soundtrack and intriguingly bizarre narrative.

This game becomes odd, dreamlike, and difficult to master. I struggle to find the right words to convey its unique atmosphere; playing it is the only way to truly understand it, yet it has largely been overlooked by many.

3 Going Under

Never Creatively Bankrupt

10 Roguelike Hidden Gems You Need To Play

If you’re a fan of roguelike dungeon crawlers and haven’t given the somehow notoriously underrated Going Under a try, you owe it to yourself to give it a shot.

It’s quite unusual, boasts some genuinely laugh-out-loud dialogues, and the fighting is incredibly immersive, where almost any object within a stage can be utilized as a weapon.

The game is remarkably vibrant, taking you on a journey through abandoned corporate storage areas, revealing the figurative skeletons hidden within their history.

Sadly, it didn’t receive the attention it should have, but if you’re a lover of its genre, I strongly suggest giving this game a try. It’s incredibly entertaining and downright amusing.

2 Zet Zillions

The Most Polished Gem

10 Roguelike Hidden Gems You Need To Play

Zet Zillions stands out as an exceptional roguelike card game, boasting a stylish hand-drawn aesthetic and fully voice-acted cinematics. Every aspect of it exudes high quality and meticulous attention to detail.

This game offers a distinctive, science fiction-inspired twist on traditional mechanics, featuring an extensive array of imaginative boss characters and one-of-a-kind cards that can create extraordinarily dynamic deck combinations.

This game isn’t particularly unique, given its mechanical similarities to other games, enhanced by a card fusion feature. However, despite its lack of originality, the quality is exceptional, and it boasts an engaging and rich storyline.

As a fellow gamer, if you’re on the hunt for a strategy RPG with a compelling narrative and a dash of campy sci-fi flair, I wholeheartedly suggest giving Zet Zillions a try!

1 Golfie

A Putt Above the Rest

10 Roguelike Hidden Gems You Need To Play

In essence, Golfie is an innovative blend that combines elements of competitive mini-golf and deckbuilding games in the style of roguelikes. Additionally, it offers numerous twists on the theme due to the diverse collection of cards you can accumulate.

Due to its exceptionally innovative concept and having just a small number of Steam user reviews, I believe it’s one of the most undiscovered gaming treasures within its genre.

You don’t need a high-gloss finish to enjoy playing this game; instead, it’s thrilling to strategize the optimal sequence for using your cards, time your swings perfectly, and see your well-executed plans unfold.

Spending time with friends playing golf is also enjoyable, as there are always fresh twists and situations to encounter, which makes the game an excellent choice overall.
