Details about the upcoming The Legend of Zelda movie are still scarce, but most gamers agree it’s going to be a big deal. The Legend of Zelda is a hugely popular and long-running video game series, and a live-action film needs to live up to fans’ expectations. This is especially true since it’s the very first live-action Zelda movie.
A Legend of Zelda adaptation might have been more worrying fifteen years ago, but recent years have actually seen a lot of successful video game movies and TV shows. We’ve seen hits like The Last of Us and Fallout that appeal to both fans and new viewers, as well as family-friendly films like The Super Mario Movie and the upcoming The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The success of Mario is particularly notable because the games don’t have a deeply complex story like The Last of Us. This gives the Mario adaptations more freedom with the plot and overall tone, but that approach wouldn’t work for every game.
The Super Mario Movies Can Be All Low-Stakes Fluff, but the Zelda Movie Can’t
The success of the Super Mario movie, even with a simple story, is easy to understand. The Super Mario universe is so well-known but open to interpretation, it allows filmmakers a lot of freedom to be creative. In fact, Mario doesn’t really have a defined voice, meaning almost any actor – even Chris Pratt – could take on the role.

The Super Mario movies are so enjoyable because they don’t take themselves too seriously. They rely on familiar characters and ideas from the Super Mario games, rather than trying to create a complicated story. In fact, focusing on simple references, lighthearted moments, and silly humor is what makes these movies work. The 1993 Super Mario Bros. film is a good example of what happens when you try to add too much depth or realism to the Mario world – it just doesn’t work as well.
While Zelda has its own established symbols and themes, they’re generally quite distinct from those in Mario. Items in Mario, like Fire Flowers and Super Mushrooms, mainly change how the game is played. In contrast, elements like the Triforce and Master Sword are central to the story in Zelda.
While not as dramatically complex as games from studios like Naughty Dog or BioWare, The Legend of Zelda tells more serious and involved stories than Super Mario. Mario games typically have simple plots that just serve the gameplay, but Zelda’s stories are deeply connected to how the games are played, designed, and feel. This means a Zelda movie needs a real plot, meaningful stakes, and a strong connection to the established lore – it can’t just be lighthearted and silly.
This aligns with comments from Zelda movie director Wes Ball made in 2024, before the film was officially announced. He described his vision for a Zelda movie as a blend of seriousness and coolness, but also fun and playful.
The Legend of Zelda Movie Will Probably Have to Take a Lot of Creative Liberties
The upcoming Zelda movie is in an interesting spot when it comes to adapting the source material. While there’s an overall story arc in the Legend of Zelda series, each game is mostly its own complete adventure, and they often retell the same basic story of Link, Zelda, and Ganon. This actually gives the filmmakers a lot of freedom – they don’t have to stick to the plot of any one game, but can borrow from any or all of them. It could be similar to the Uncharted movie, which combined elements from across the entire game series.
Even if the upcoming Zelda movie adapts a specific game storyline – many believe it will be based on Breath of the Wild, partly because of the actor’s Link costume – it will still have challenges transitioning from a video game to a film. One key question is whether Link will have a voice. While a silent protagonist works well in a game, it might not translate to a movie. The Super Mario movies handled similar issues with a lighthearted, cartoonish approach, but finding solutions for the Zelda film could be more difficult.
