As someone who has spent countless hours delving into the dark and mysterious corners of Path of Exile, I can confidently say that its upcoming sequel, Path of Exile 2, is shaping up to be an absolute game-changer. Having played both the original and the new iteration, I must admit, it’s like night and day!
After five years since its announcement and over a decade following the debut of the original game, Grinding Gear Games’ Path of Exile 2 is almost ready to be released, aiming to expand its fan base with enhanced accessibility, new character classes, skills, and numerous improvements. Set to start early access on December 6, Path of Exile 2 will initially offer three out of six campaign acts, along with a myriad of various settings, hundreds of unique monster species, and dozens of bosses, with additional content planned for the near future. Upon finishing the initial three campaign acts during early access, players can replay them on a harder difficulty level called “Cruel” and unlock the endgame experience once they complete it.
Game Rant had a nearly 8-hour playtime with Path of Exile 2, falling short of fully exploring all it has to offer, but it provided a good initial impression. The game appears to enhance its predecessor’s formula, aiming to thrive in the competitive ARPG scene when it enters early access on December 6. From our limited experience, Path of Exile 2 seems promising, managing to maintain the essence of its forerunner while offering a contemporary and refreshing gaming experience.
Path of Exile 2 Is PoE Rebuilt for the Next Generation
Path of Exile 2’s Aim Is to Be a Better Version of the First Game
One major challenge that Path of Exile 2 had to overcome was finding a way to bridge the divide between its established player base and potential newcomers without alienating veteran players for the sake of attracting a fresh audience. Given that the original Path of Exile is now over a decade old, its sequel must take significant steps to keep the franchise relevant in today’s market, particularly since the first game has been known to be quite challenging for newcomers to approach.
Maintaining its challenging essence is what keeps the dedicated player base of Path of Exile intact. Consequently, it must strike a balance between the old and the new. Luckily, it seems that Path of Exile 2 is already demonstrating success in this aspect.
In essence, Path of Exile 2 is essentially a fresh, upgraded version of the original Path of Exile, tailored for future gamers. This philosophy has been consistently emphasized by director Jonathan Rogers and Grinding Gear Games throughout the development of Path of Exile 2, and it’s evident from our hands-on experience. Path of Exile 2 has made significant advancements in various aspects to make the game more accessible for newcomers, yet it hasn’t watered down the core mechanics of the first game to a point where longtime players might feel alienated. Key modifications include a streamlined skill system, expanded playstyle and build versatility, a user interface that’s easier to navigate, significantly enhanced visuals, and a stronger focus on storytelling.
The Story of Path of Exile 2
Concerning the new game, Path of Exile 2, unfolds 20 years following the incidents in Path of Exile. In this sequel, the Beast, the root of all contamination in Wraeclast, has been freed again. Initially tiny, the Count is determined to nurture and control it, causing the Beast’s corruption to spread anew across the world. The Count’s behavior is becoming increasingly erratic as he continues to feed the Beast, growing more psychotic with each passing day.
In the meantime, the main character you control has been apprehended by the Count’s guards, who have been detaining individuals falsely accused of crimes. This serves as the starting point for your journey in Path of Exile 2, and unlike the original game, this sequel places a greater focus on an engaging and cinematic narrative.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that for the very first time in this captivating series, Path of Exile 2 offers an exhilarating opening cinematic. This breathtaking sequence is not only intense but also deeply impactful, crafting a compelling narrative hook that promises an unforgettable journey ahead.
The Refined Gameplay of Path of Exile 2
In Path of Exile 2, one of the most significant updates revolves around an improved skill system that’s easier to handle compared to the original Path of Exile. This streamlined system is expected to be a major draw for new players as it simplifies the gameplay experience. In the original game, players would insert Skill and Support Gems into their armor pieces and then place them in linked sockets on their equipment. The Skill Gems granted active skills, while the Support Gems modified any skills they were connected to, requiring these gems to be linked through specific sockets for functionality. In Path of Exile 2, this system is made more user-friendly by doing away with linked sockets altogether.
In Path of Exile 2, instead of picking up regular Skill and Support Gems directly, players start off with raw or Uncut Skill and Support Gems. These uncut gems serve as the base for players to engrave or enhance a skill of their preference using the Gemcutting system. Similarly, Uncut Support Gems can be used to craft Support Gems in Path of Exile 2.
In essence, Path of Exile 2 can be described as an updated version of Path of Exile, designed for a new era.
In “Path of Exile,” the focus has always been on empowering players, but the build experimentation in “Path of Exile 2” is expected to be more approachable for newcomers. For instance, “Path of Exile 2” offers an automatic gem recommendation system that guides players, simplifying their choices. However, this feature can be disabled at any time, giving players full flexibility to tailor their build as they prefer. Notably, in “Path of Exile 2,” virtually every class has access to almost all resources, opening up a vast array of possibilities.
The Enhanced Visuals of Path of Exile 2
One notable aspect of Path of Exile 2 is its significantly improved visuals. Despite using the same engine as its predecessor, the visuals in Path of Exile 2 are noticeably more advanced, making it seem like a different realm visually. In fact, some would argue that the visuals in Path of Exile 2 are even more realistic than those in Diablo 4, which can make them all the more striking at times. The particle effects, in particular, are exceptional, making each elemental skill a sight to behold.
Path of Exile 2 Ramps Up the Difficulty
Path of Exile 2 Is Much More Challenging Than the First Game
The original game, Path of Exile, has always been challenging, but the upcoming sequel, Path of Exile 2, takes difficulty to a new height. In fact, during a preview, Rogers mentioned that they aim for players to die in the first boss fight, hinting at the increased challenge level in the sequel. Regular enemies in the game are now more aggressive, hit harder, and move faster than ever before. The boss fights in Path of Exile 2 amplify these traits even further. Despite this, the enhanced difficulty doesn’t diminish Path of Exile 2‘s improved accessibility; it simply means players won’t be able to effortlessly slaughter enemies or overpower bosses as they might in an ARPG like Diablo 4.
It appears Rogers was truthful. From our experience with the game, those intending to play Path of Exile 2 should anticipate and be prepared for frequent deaths. However, as players develop their skills and their characters gain power, they’ll find some aspects of the game less challenging. This is typical of Action Role-Playing Games (ARPGs), considering that advancement primarily comes from acquiring better gear. But don’t misunderstand, the game doesn’t get easier; instead, it becomes increasingly difficult as players progress, even in the endgame. Keep in mind, we didn’t have access to the full story during our playtest.
Path of Exile 2’s Dodge Roll Mechanic Is Indicative of the Game’s Difficulty
In the exciting update of “Path of Exile 2”, one novelty in the combat system is the dodge roll skill. Unlike other Action Role-Playing Games (ARPGs), “Path of Exile” has never previously incorporated this mechanic. Although it enhances player engagement, it’s also introduced to cope with the higher level of difficulty in “Path of Exile 2”. Players are expected to frequently utilize dodge rolls for success. However, it’s not to the extent that spamming the ability is essential; instead, it offers a suitable balance between attacking enemies and dodging their attacks.
Path of Exile 2’s New Classes Offer a Wider Variety of Playstyles Than Before
Path of Exile 2 Adds Six New Playable Classes
In the latest update for Path of Exile 2, six fresh classes have been introduced, pushing the total number to twelve. During our preview, we had some exposure to other characters such as the Mercenary and Sorceress, but we found ourselves drawn primarily to the Monk. Time spent with the Monk was time well invested.
During our sneak peek, we successfully advanced to Level 22 alongside the Monk character, and by that point, it had become potent enough to conquer some of the earliest game’s most formidable bosses in “Path of Exile 2”. However, it’s important to note that this depends greatly on the abilities chosen by players and their individual skill levels.
In “Path of Exile 2,” the Mercenary class offers a lot of fun, but its learning curve could be a challenge for some due to its similarity to first-person shooter games. This might cause some veterans of “Path of Exile” or fans of ARPGs in general to struggle adapting. However, “Path of Exile 2” makes it simple to switch movement controls on PC from mouse to WASD, with WASD being the recommended method for the Mercenary because it plays like an FPS. With WASD for movement, players can then use the mouse to aim, which is more efficient than trying to play the class by using the mouse for both movement and aiming.
In addition, we delved into the new Sorceress class in Path of Exile 2, which shares similarities with sorcerer classes in other action RPGs. However, what sets Path of Exile 2’s Sorceress apart is its extensive build variety and room for experimentation. This flexibility empowers players to customize their spells extensively, allowing them to launch multiple fireballs simultaneously or have one explode, sending several more hurtling towards enemies. It’s also important to note that, similar to the Monk, the Sorceress can take a substantial amount of damage upon being hit, potentially even more than the Monk.
Although Path of Exile 2 has made efforts to improve accessibility, it’s important to note that it might take newcomers some time to adapt due to its intricate systems, even if they are now introduced more gradually. As Path of Exile 2, similar to its original version, promotes exploration and experimentation, some players may still find the game a bit daunting. However, we found the new player experience invigorating, particularly having played the first game for an extended period ourselves. At the very least, veteran Path of Exile players who intend to play the sequel might discover it less challenging to convince their friends to join them this time around.
In summary, the upcoming game “Path of Exile 2” appears set to deliver an outstanding ARPG experience and could potentially challenge its peers in the genre. Previously, titles like “Diablo” have dominated the scene, but with its early access launch on December 6, “Path of Exile 2” seems poised to break through and stand tall among its contemporaries. Featuring rapid-fire gameplay, a more accessible experience for newcomers, six fresh character classes to select, and an unprecedented emphasis on storytelling, “Path of Exile 2” has the potential to captivate players and establish itself as a compelling choice in the ARPG genre.
