Esoteric Ebb is a fascinating and varied world. Players take on the role of The Cleric, Ragn, who is investigating a tea shop explosion. This journey involves talking to a wide range of characters – different races, with different beliefs and pasts – and exploring treacherous dungeons while battling powerful enemies. The game includes helpful tutorials, but you’ll need to work quickly, as an important election is fast approaching.
To help you understand these complicated systems and figure everything out before voting begins, here are a few key tips to guide you.

Invest in Your Ability Scores Wisely
When you begin a new game, the first thing you’ll do is often one of the most crucial. If you’re new to Dungeons & Dragons, the system of stats and modifiers can seem confusing. Essentially, modifiers are added to your dice rolls to determine the outcome of your actions—for example, a roll of 10 plus a +2 modifier results in a total of 12.
Although Esoteric Ebb has slightly changed these rules, the core concept remains: for every two ability points you have above 10, you gain a bonus. Conversely, ability scores below 10 result in penalties – a score of 9 gives a -1 penalty, 7 a -2, 5 a -3, and so on. Getting a high bonus to any attribute is significant, as it makes it easier to succeed at skills and challenges.
Okay, so I’ve learned the hard way that when I’m making a new character, it’s a bad idea to spread my points all over the place. It feels good to be okay at everything, but it really holds you back. What I do now is pick a few abilities and really focus on those. Most challenges actually have a couple of ways to tackle them, but some of the harder ones? You need a seriously high bonus to pass without relying on a lucky 20 on the dice. By specializing, I can boost my chances of success in pretty much any situation.
Increasing certain abilities means others have to stay the same or even decrease, potentially making you more likely to fail at those related tasks. Luckily, Esoteric Ebb offers plenty of ways to overcome difficult challenges, so you won’t get stuck and unable to continue the story. Plus, you can often re-roll using a Shard of Jor. Don’t be afraid to focus on your weaknesses – they can actually unlock incredible power!
Save Often
This applies to most role-playing games, but it’s especially important in story-focused games where your decisions have a real impact: save your progress frequently! The game’s conversations change based on the situation and random chance, so you don’t want to be stuck because of a wrong choice or a simple mistake.
Although you can reload saves if you really want, it’s more rewarding to accept your failures. The game often reveals cool and unexpected things when things don’t go as planned, so embrace the chaos! Just be aware that some quests have time limits or can fail completely, so it’s a good idea to keep a couple of extra save files just in case you need to rewind a bit.
Click Highlighted Words
In Esoteric Ebb, important details are marked with special emphasis. Clicking these highlighted words provides helpful information about the world and saves them in your journal for later. Don’t worry – checking these details during conversations or browsing the menus won’t move the game’s clock forward, so you can read as much as you like without worrying about deadlines.
These short descriptions offer helpful background information, like details about past events, explanations of spells, or clues to solve the mystery. They aren’t required to advance the story, but they enrich your understanding of the game world and are worth reading.
Eat to Restore Health
Although Ragn can heal himself with spells or by resting, eating food is usually the fastest way to recover health. This lets him save his spells for tougher battles or important discoveries, and avoids the downtime of a rest. The game offers various food options, and apples are the most common.
Apples don’t restore much health individually—just one HP each—but they can be really helpful, particularly when you’re starting out. Make an effort to keep your health full by using them, and remember to search for places where you can find more. The level one spell ‘Goodapple’ is also a good choice, as it creates golden apples that restore health even when you’re not fighting.
Behold NPCs
When you use the “Behold” action on a character, you attempt a skill check to learn more about them. This information is really helpful and can even unlock new dialogue options. The skill check uses a different stat each time—sometimes it’s wisdom, other times strength or charisma, and so on. You might not immediately get a complete understanding of everyone you meet, but even a little information can help you figure out the best way to talk to them.
Examine Your Items
Lots of the items you find can help you progress in the game, give you useful details, or boost your abilities. Whenever you get something new, it’s a good idea to check it in your inventory – you might be surprised by what you discover!
Don’t Ignore Side Quests
The side quests in Esoteric Ebb are truly outstanding, offering a diverse range of activities. Some are simple, standalone tasks, but many cleverly connect to the main story, providing helpful hints about where to go, who to talk to, and how to solve the mystery surrounding the tea shop. Beyond their importance to the plot, these quests are exceptionally well-written, featuring memorable characters and engaging puzzles that you’d miss if you only followed the main storyline.
Honestly, side quests are where it’s at for good gear. A lot of the best weapons and spells I’ve found aren’t on the main path, they’re rewards for checking out those extra adventures. It really helps my Cleric handle all the different challenges the game throws at me. And don’t stress about feeling like you’re falling behind if you do them – there’s totally enough time to finish everything, both the side stuff and the main story.
Unlock Your Feats
Feats are helpful bonuses that your character gains automatically. Instead of finding them like in traditional Dungeons & Dragons, you earn feats by completing quests. Once a quest is finished, check the quest tree menu and select “Take Root.” This starts a conversation where you choose the specific bonus you want – feats can improve your skills, stats, or offer other advantages.
Don’t worry too much about picking the absolute best option. Even though some abilities might seem better than others from a quest, you don’t actually need to choose any of them to win the game. Also, it’s easy to overlook when a quest is finished, so be sure to check the Quest tab in your journal to see how you’re doing.
Use your Spells
Many RPG players tend to save items and spell slots for emergencies, but it’s often better to use them more freely. Using spells can actually solve problems or prevent bigger issues later on, potentially saving you resources in the long run.
Don’t stress about using up all your spell slots! There are many ways to get them back. Besides a short rest which recovers one slot, you can use items like incense or dream patches. Later on, certain abilities will also help you regain slots, and a long rest will completely restore both your health and all your spell slots. So, if you think a spell might help, don’t hesitate to cast it!
