The Elbaph arc of One Piece surprised everyone when it revealed the world’s true ruler, Saint Nerona Imu, in Warland. Fans didn’t anticipate seeing Imu, as he’s expected to be the series’ ultimate villain. Eiichiro Oda stunned readers by introducing the world’s most powerful being during the Elbaph arc, and revealed the power of Imu’s unique Devil Fruit, known as Akuma no Mi. Imu’s abilities from this fruit are far beyond those of ordinary Devil Fruits, making him incredibly powerful.
Breaking Down The Difference Between Imu’s ‘Devil’s Fruit’ and Standard Devil Fruits
As a huge One Piece fan, I’m totally fascinated by Imu’s powers! It’s confirmed he has a Devil Fruit – an Akuma no Mi – but it’s unlike anything we’ve seen before. Usually, these fruits are written with specific kanji characters, but Imu’s fruit is written using katakana instead! That seemingly small detail is huge because it means Imu doesn’t have a regular Devil Fruit. He has something fundamentally different – essentially, ‘the Fruit of the Devil’ itself, and that’s what sets it apart from every other power in the series. It’s a game-changer!
Analyzing The Unique Transformations Of The Sovereign’s Fruit
The exact powers of Imu’s Devil Fruit remain a secret, but Oda has revealed a lot about what it can do, including its unusual transformations. We first saw Imu transform in chapter 1085 of One Piece, during the Reverie arc. When Sabo attacked Imu and the Five Elders in Marijoa, all six of them instantly changed form – and Imu became a huge, four-legged beast. This creature used a massive, dragon-like mouth to swallow Sabo’s flames, which strongly suggests that Imu’s Devil Fruit is a Mythical Zoan type. However, there’s clearly more to this fruit than meets the eye.
During the Elbaph arc in One Piece chapter 1179, Imu transformed again, growing large horns and taking on a frightening appearance. Dark clouds formed around their neck, featuring ringed eyes within them, and Imu also developed a pointed tail. Their white hair stood out against their dark skin. This new form seems to be a hybrid resulting from Imu’s Devil Fruit power. While the fruit appears to be a Mythical Zoan type, it also displays abilities similar to both Paramecia and Logia fruits, suggesting a very unusual and powerful combination.
Assessing The Demonic Abilities Acquired By The World’s Ruler
Imu’s Devil Fruit is incredibly unique, setting it apart from all others. It shares traits with both Zoan and Paramecia types – it allows for transformations like a Zoan, but also lets Imu manipulate the environment, creating monstrous, animated creatures, a characteristic of an awakened Paramecia. This suggests the fruit is a hybrid of these two types. Furthermore, Imu seems to have a degree of intangibility; their shadow can absorb attacks and instantly reform even after being destroyed, similar to the powers of Logia-type Devil Fruits.
Everything was decided long ago. This all started way back in the past! I entrust the Holy Land to you — Saint Imu Nerona, One Piece 1179
Nerona Imu’s Devil Fruit is incredibly powerful, effectively combining the abilities of all three types – Zoan, Logia, and Paramecia – making it unique. Beyond that, Imu can grant special Covenants to their followers, bestowing them with superhuman strength, immortality, and the ability to instantly heal and teleport through a mysterious realm called the Abyss. Some Covenants, like the Abyssal Covenant, even grant powers similar to Devil Fruits, drawing on Yokai abilities. Furthermore, Imu can use the Devil Fruit’s power, called Domi Reversi, to turn enemies into demonic slaves.

Why The Ruler’s ‘Devil’s Fruit’ Is The Supreme Power In The Series
Saint Imu Nerona’s Devil Fruit is unique and far more powerful than any other we’ve seen. It’s likely the very first Devil Fruit ever created, and unlike others that simply grant abilities, this one seems to be the fruit of the devil itself. Its purpose appears to be focused on causing death, destruction, and maintaining control over others.
This Devil Fruit is arguably the most powerful ability in the world of One Piece. It can grant immortality, control others as slaves, and even inflict evil upon entire nations – powers that would challenge even a god like Nika. As the story progresses in the Elbaph Arc, the author will likely reveal even more of its incredible capabilities.
One Piece chapter 1180 will be available to read on Manga Plus on April 19, 2026, at 11 a.m. EST.
