Jason Blundell, a long-time game developer famous for his work on the Call of Duty series, has announced he’s starting a new game studio. This news follows Sony’s recent and unexpected closure of Dark Outlaw Games, where Blundell was previously leading development. This closure is part of a larger trend of Sony closing several of its internal PlayStation game studios.
Cameron Blundell is best known for his work on the Zombies mode in the Call of Duty games, particularly creating the story arc known as Chaos in the Black Ops series. He gained attention when he left Activision-Blizzard in 2021, joining Deviation Games for just over a year. Later, in March 2025, PlayStation hired him to lead Dark Outlaw Games, but that studio unfortunately closed in March 2026.
Introducing Magic Fractal
During a recent livestream with JC Farmer, formerly of Dark Outlaw Games, developer Blundell announced the creation of his new studio, MagicFractal. Details about the studio and its projects are currently scarce. The company website is minimal, offering only a way to get in touch, and Blundell didn’t share any specifics about what they’re working on. Both Farmer and Blundell encouraged fans to follow MagicFractal on Twitter (currently around 9,300 followers) to show their support.
Dark Outlaw Studios was working on a secret project, and according to studio head Blundell, it wasn’t a game designed to continually generate revenue through ongoing updates and purchases. Since the project was cancelled, MagicFractal might be able to build upon some of Dark Outlaw’s original concepts. However, it’s also possible the team is starting fresh, as legal issues around intellectual property are common in the gaming world.
It’s unfortunate Dark Outlaw Studios closed, but it’s great to see Blundell starting a new studio. With so many challenges in the gaming industry right now, it’s encouraging to support new developers, and it looks like gamers are already excited about what Blundell and his team are doing – their social media gained a following quickly! Hopefully, they can keep that positive momentum going and successfully launch their game.

Game shutdowns are becoming increasingly common, and both Xbox and PlayStation have been significantly affected lately. It’s hard to pinpoint Sony’s exact plans based on recent closures, but a pattern is emerging. After the unsuccessful launch of Concord, Firewalk Studios was closed, and even the highly-regarded Bluepoint Games, known for the excellent Demon’s Souls remake, was shuttered. With both online and single-player games being cancelled, it appears Sony is primarily aiming to reduce costs.
The video game industry is facing challenges, but hopefully things will improve. Until then, gamers are counting on new developers to step up and replace those that have struggled. We’re eager to see if Magic Fractal can quickly become a success.
