Man, trying to explain what Final Fantasy X is is tough. It’s not really sci-fi, and ‘beachpunk’ doesn’t even begin to cover it. It’s got this totally unique atmosphere that just doesn’t show up in any other Final Fantasy game, at least not to the same degree. It really stands out, and honestly, nothing since has quite captured that same feeling.

It was such a shock after Final Fantasy IX, which felt like a classic medieval RPG. Seriously, going from that to X was a total whiplash – a huge change in tone, but in a really fun way!

It was exactly what the game needed, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that immediately shifts into an incredibly memorable experience. While some criticized its attempt to feel modern for the time, it actually became a defining moment – a truly iconic start that propelled the entire story forward. Considering all the Final Fantasy games, sports moments are surprisingly rare, and this one really stood out.

9. The Wedding Rescue

I was really into Final Fantasy X, but honestly, it hadn’t quite felt like a classic Final Fantasy game to me yet. The exciting party sequence, with Tidus sliding down rails amidst the powerful chaos of the Aeons, is one of the most memorable moments in Final Fantasy. It was a truly incredible scene, and while unlike anything seen in previous games, it established this game as a standout title in the series.

Wakka from Final Fantasy X is a complex character. He’s a loyal friend to Tidus, but also deeply religious and follows the teachings of Yu Yevon. While the Final Fantasy series has featured religious characters before, Wakka presents a unique take on the trope. His faith leads him to strongly oppose the Al Bhed people, sometimes in a way that feels prejudiced.

However, everything falls apart when the church’s corruption is exposed. This is a powerful moment for the character, as he regrets his past actions and realizes he’s been manipulated by the Church of Yu Yevon, leading him to change his beliefs and behavior. It’s a striking and surprisingly mature scene – seeing someone abandon a lifelong faith is a rare and impactful moment in a series that doesn’t usually tackle such complex themes.

It’s true that this scene gets a lot of criticism, but many people miss the real meaning behind it. Tidus is desperately trying to cheer Yuna up and relieve her stress. He’s willing to look foolish to make her smile, which explains his over-the-top, silly laugh. Ultimately, he wants to remind her that even in a difficult world, there’s still room for happiness.

Okay, so maybe this scene gets a lot of flak now, but honestly, it was a huge deal for me as a fan. It was the first time the game had voice acting, which automatically made it more impactful. But beyond that, it was the first time I really saw the characters feeling things – their emotions were actually visible on their faces, and it wasn’t done with CGI cutscenes. It was a really touching moment and felt so different from anything the series had done before. It was momentous, even if people joke about it now!

Just when things seem settled, a major twist happens. Seymour’s plan is revealed, and we discover his true intentions with Yuna – it’s a shocking reveal that completely changes how you see him. He’s not the kind, helpful advisor he pretends to be, and it turns out the entire church is also deeply corrupt.

In all the Final Fantasy games I’ve played, I’ve never seen a potential party member’s allegiance shift so quickly. You suspect something might happen, but it’s not confirmed until Seymour’s incredibly awkward and unsettling proposal. This scene also features some of the best voice acting in the series, and it’s a shame later games haven’t included similar, more nuanced moments.

5. Auron’s Truth

The Strong Unsent Type

Okay, so Auron in Final Fantasy X is seriously one of the coolest characters – all stoic and experienced. But man, his backstory is a total gut punch. He plays the mentor role perfectly, always looking out for Tidus and Yuna, so finding out he’s actually a spirit, an Unsent who died during Braska’s pilgrimage, completely blew my mind. It means he’s been helping them this whole time as a ghost, trying to finish what he couldn’t before! It adds so much weight to everything he does, knowing he’s already lived and died trying to stop Sin.

This is a pivotal moment that foreshadows a sad ending. The characters will suffer greatly, and few will escape without lasting consequences. It’s particularly impactful because you don’t immediately lose Auron as a companion; you know his time is limited, which makes every scene with him more heartbreaking. This moment is uniquely powerful within the series, both for its clever storytelling and its emotional resonance.

4. The Sending

Yuna’s Standout Scene

The scene where Yuna performs the Sending in Final Fantasy X is incredibly memorable. It’s clear that the Gommage scene in Clair Obscur drew heavy inspiration from this moment. During the Sending, Yuna helps guide the spirits of those who have died after an attack by Sin. It’s a beautiful and visually powerful scene—something the Final Fantasy series hadn’t quite achieved before, and it’s been noticeably absent from later games.

The scene is both heartbreaking and beautiful, revealing that Yuna, despite appearing optimistic, is strong enough to handle the challenges ahead. It also suggests that there’s more to the story than what we currently understand, hinting at hidden darkness.

While previous Final Fantasy games featured romantic relationships, none were portrayed as beautifully as the scene at Macalania Lake. It’s widely considered the most memorable love scene in the series, thanks to its stunning visuals – especially the glowing Pyreflies – and the genuine intimacy shared between the characters for the first time.

I know some of you might be thinking about Aerith, but the key difference is that she was taken by surprise. Yuna, on the other hand, knows what’s going to happen – she sees the attack coming and still chooses to continue. She’s sacrificing herself for the sake of others. It’s incredibly sad, especially considering how young she is, and it’s a level of selflessness we hadn’t seen from any character in the series before.

Even now, I consider this the most powerfully emotional ending in any game ever made. The way the story builds to the reveal that Tidus was actually a dream created by the Fayth is incredibly impactful. He existed solely as a dream, sustained by them to break the endless cycle of Sin. Once that goal is accomplished, his dream ends, and the final scene between him and Yuna is one of the most heartbreaking moments I’ve experienced in any form of art.

Okay, so they finally go in for a hug, and then Tidus just… vanishes. It’s like the Fayth, these beings who’ve been running this whole crazy experiment for ages, can finally rest. Yuna makes it through, but she’s left heartbroken, without Tidus. Honestly, it was such a shocking moment, I was completely floored. And I’m not just saying that as someone who played the game – it genuinely hit me harder than any other ending in a Final Fantasy game, before or since. It was a real gut punch.
