I’ve been really into drawing lately, and as part of my daily art practice, I decided to redesign the original Kanto starters – Bulbasaur and its evolutions. I shared my take on them online, and it’s been fun seeing what people think!
Bulbasaur, often called the Seed Pokemon, is the Grass-type starter in the original Pokemon Red and Blue games and the very first Pokemon listed in the Pokedex. It’s one of the first Pokemon new trainers encounter that has two types – Grass and Poison. As Bulbasaur evolves into Ivysaur and then Venusaur, the bulb on its back grows into a pink flower that can collect and use sunlight for energy. Venusaur is known for its strong defenses and versatile moves, making it one of the most powerful Grass-type Pokemon found in the Kanto region.
Pokemon Fan Shares Amazing Reinterpretations of Bulbasaur and Other Kanto Starters
Fans have previously reimagined Bulbasaur and its evolutions, but one artist recently gave the Seed Pokémon a fresh look inspired by the animal that originally inspired its design. Reddit user NehGon shared their artwork of Bulbasaur and the other Kanto starters on the Pokémon subreddit. NehGon emphasized the toad-like qualities of Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, and Venusaur in their redesigns. The new Bulbasaur has a bullfrog-shaped body with a cream-colored belly and a small bulb on its back. When it evolves into Ivysaur, its leaves develop pink edges, resembling poison ivy. Finally, the fully evolved Venusaur is decorated with ornamental details and features a blooming corpse lily on its back.
As part of a daily drawing practice, artist NehGon shared their versions of the Charmander and Squirtle evolutionary lines, alongside their Bulbasaur designs. NehGon’s Charmander emphasizes the Pokémon’s lizard features with a thicker tail and wider eyes. Their Charmeleon includes a dinosaur-like fin on its head. While maintaining the official color scheme, NehGon’s Charizard has a slimmer build and shorter arms. For the Squirtle line, NehGon gave Squirtle a larger tail and designed Wartortle and Blastoise to look more rugged. NehGon’s Wartortle features red eyes and a spiky, chipped shell. Notably, their Blastoise has coral instead of metal for its water cannons, with coral patterns also decorating its arms and shoulders.
Fan Interest in Kanto Pokemon Has Grown For One Reason
NehGon recently created new artwork featuring the original Kanto Pokémon starters shortly after Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen became available on Nintendo Switch. These games were the first remakes in the main Pokémon series, updating the classic Kanto region with features like Pokémon abilities and natures from the third generation. Now that Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen are reaching a new generation of players on Switch, fans are revisiting strategies and secrets that have been a part of the games for over twenty years.

Bringing back Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen will keep fans entertained while they wait for Pokemon Winds and Waves, which is scheduled to come out on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027. While some familiar Pokemon will be in Pokemon Winds and Waves, it’s still unknown if the original Kanto starters will be included in the new game’s full roster.
