The latest update to the rules of Dungeons & Dragons, often called 5.5e by fans, is now officially recognized as such by D&D Beyond. D&D Beyond, the popular digital toolset for the game, is adopting the 5.5e designation.
In September 2021, the makers of Dungeons & Dragons announced a continuous evolution of the 5th Edition rules, designed to be compatible with existing materials. Initially called One D&D, the project was later rebranded as Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition (2024) to avoid giving the impression of a completely new edition. However, fans quickly started calling this updated version “5.5e.”
Dungeons and Dragons 2024 Now Called ‘5.5e’ on D&D Beyond
Wizards of the Coast has started acknowledging a revised version of 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons, often called 5.5e. Beginning in March 2026, the digital platform D&D Beyond began labeling content from the 2024 edition as 5.5e. While the book titles remain the same, the rules and options available on D&D Beyond – in places like your personal library and the Quickbuilder tool – now clearly identify as belonging to this 5.5e version.
Despite the recent changes, D&D Beyond clarifies this isn’t a full rebrand of the game. Wizards of the Coast won’t be officially calling the 2024 rules ‘5.5e’ anywhere except on the D&D Beyond website. The names of core books like the Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master’s Guide, as well as any future Dungeons & Dragons releases, will remain unchanged. The ‘5.5e’ label is simply a way for D&D Beyond to organize content and help players easily find materials from the latest version of 5th Edition.
The name ‘5.5e’ comes from ‘3.5e,’ a big update to the 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons rules released in 2003. Like the 2024 update to 5th Edition, 3.5e included new core rulebooks, rebalanced options for players and Dungeon Masters, and kept older materials usable. Some fans feel 5.5e changes 5th Edition even more than 3.5e changed 3rd Edition, which explains why the name caught on. However, it took Wizards of the Coast much longer to officially use the ‘5.5e’ label – and they only did so on D&D Beyond.

The official D&D Beyond FAQ states that Wizards of the Coast doesn’t currently plan a major overhaul labeled as “5.5e,” but doesn’t rule it out for the future. The rules updates planned for 2024 are designed to be long-lasting, but Wizards of the Coast could still decide to revise the rules or create a new edition of Dungeons & Dragons further down the line. For now, though, it appears they’ve stopped pushing against the term “5.5e,” even if they aren’t using it consistently themselves.
