As a seasoned anime fan with over two decades of immersion in this captivating world, I can confidently say that the announcement of Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin anime sequel has me utterly thrilled! I’ve been following the journey of Sakuna since its inception as a game, and to see it evolve into an anime was nothing short of enchanting.

The anime adaptation of “Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin” has been confirmed for a sequel. This animation is derived from the game titled “Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin,” which was created by Edelweiss.

The game titled “X” debuted in the United States during November of 2020 across platforms such as Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam. To everyone’s surprise, sales were strong. However, it wasn’t until this year that the anime version was released. In 2021-2022, a manga adaptation of the game was published online on the Comiplex website, with the collected editions available in two volumes.

The sequel of the anime was unveiled concurrently with a supplementary video game, yet few details about the animation were disclosed, including its specific format such as a new TV season, a movie, an OVA, or any other possible format. The release date is still undisclosed. A promotional video was distributed, though it pertained exclusively to the fresh game.

The tale of Sakuna unfolds as she, a once pampered harvest goddess, finds herself exiled from heaven. Now on the unruly island of Hinoe teeming with demons, she embarks on a journey to restore her honor and embody her dual roles as both a harvest deity and a warrior. This involves confronting monstrous creatures and cultivating rice, skills that she should naturally excel at due to her divine status (hence the subtitle “of rice and ruins”). Fortunately, Tama stands by her side, along with the handful of people she manages to rally, in support of her quest.

Sakuna Anime Sequel Possible Staff

Changes are not expected but could happen

There’s no definitive news yet on whether the series will resume at studio PA Works, nor if the primary crew will rejoin. Typically, production crews aim to retain the same team for sequels as significant staff changes can unsettle fans (unless the show was generally perceived poorly or average by them).

It looks like Masayuki Yoshihara is a strong contender for directing the next animation project, with Jukki Hanada (from Sengoku Youko) likely to contribute to the series composition. However, since most team members work independently, there may be some adjustments based on the schedules of individual animators. For instance, Yasuo Fujii and Yuriko Abe have worked together with Hanada or Yoshihara on various episodes as animation directors or storyboarders. If either Hanada or Yoshihara is unable or unwilling to return for this project, there’s a possibility that one or both of these freelancers could step in to fill their roles.

It’s very unlikely that the voice cast will be altered, given that they reprised their roles from the game in the anime. Although the game offers both Japanese and English audio, the anime has yet to be dubbed into English. Maintaining the original cast is generally important, as major changes without clear reasoning can upset fans.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
