As a longtime fan of Kojima’s work, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia mixed with anticipation upon hearing about his latest project, Physint. While it’s true that Metal Gear has left a void in my gaming life since its hiatus, the idea of a cinematic espionage game from Kojima Productions feels like a warm, familiar hug.
Known for numerous things such as playful promotions, strong artistic convictions, and unique quirks, Hideo Kojima’s most enduring symbol is arguably the Metal Gear series, which has been inactive for a while. With Metal Gear shifting direction without Kojima’s guidance, the creator of this franchise is stepping forward once more, preparing to release a spy game for PlayStation that goes by the name of Physint.
Scarcely anything is known about the mysterious ‘Physint’, but Kojima has openly admitted that a significant driving force behind its creation was the public demand for a fresh espionage game following the end of the ‘Metal Gear’ series. Although they might appear somewhat outdated, especially in terms of graphics and production quality, when the first ‘Metal Gear Solid’ game debuted in 1998, it was groundbreaking: the idea that games could emulate film in visuals and atmosphere was largely unexplored at the time, and combined with revolutionary stealth mechanics, ‘Metal Gear Solid’ became something truly remarkable. As the series evolved with each new release, it’s yet to be seen what it will become without Kojima leading the way, but its essence could very well continue through ‘Physint’.
1998’s “Metal Gear Solid” wasn’t the initial game in the franchise, but it became the cornerstone that shaped its identity for years to come.
Physint Will Undeniably Draw Metal Gear Comparisons, But Maybe That’s Not So Bad
Kojima’s Involvement Will Make Physint’s Similarities to Metal Gear Hard To Deny
While it’s important to remember that predictions about a Kojima game can be uncertain, especially when it comes to an espionage title that seems in some way connected to the absence of a contemporary Metal Gear, it’s reasonable to expect that longtime fans might find certain similarities. Even if Physint is dramatically distinct, its status as a cinematic stealth game means it will be compared to Kojima’s past creations—just like Death Stranding was compared to Metal Gear, despite being a completely different game.
Kojima’s Portfolio Is Growing Increasingly Diverse
If another game director revisits an old genre, it might appear they are moving backwards. However, as time passes, Kojima seems to be expanding his creative horizons, making it challenging to assert he’s limiting his work. In contrast to this perception, Kojima Productions appears to be broadening its scope with projects like OD, offering a thrilling horror experience, and Death Stranding 2, which continues to build on the quirky gameplay and storyline of its predecessor.
In essence, Physint could symbolize Kojima Productions’ revisit to their original style, enabling them to delve back into the genre they initially made their mark in. As we’ve noted earlier, the Metal Gear Solid series has always been characterized by progression and outlandish narrative twists from one installment to another. Therefore, it seems likely that Physint will continue this trend, potentially offering a familiar Metal Gear Solid experience while building upon the ideas presented in Metal Gear Solid 5, infused with a significant amount of something new (ingredient X).
Without a doubt, the upcoming project Physint promises to be an intriguing spectacle. Kojima is no longer solely associated with Metal Gear; his future creations like Death Stranding and OD are significantly impacting his artistic identity, and it’s likely that these recent works will influence Physint. Fingers crossed that some essence of the classic Metal Gear series is incorporated too.
