As a long-time fan of the Dune franchise, I must say that the anticipation for Dune: Prophecy is overwhelming. After years of waiting and multiple failed attempts to adapt Frank Herbert’s masterpiece, it feels like we’re finally on the verge of something truly special. The recent film adaptation was a near-perfect take on the material, but the prequels and expanded universe are ripe for exploration.
Dune: Prophecy, a new venture in the Dune series, marks a unique step forward. Previous attempts by filmmakers and showrunners to adapt Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel have fallen short until Denis Villeneuve’s recent acclaimed adaptation. Now that a nearly perfect interpretation has been achieved, creators can delve into the prequels and additional content. While Dune offers a narrow glimpse into an incredibly expansive universe, Dune: Prophecy could potentially allow fans less fond of the books to explore the galaxy beyond Arrakis’ deserts.
There is enough content in the Dune prequel books to span numerous TV seasons or establish a cinematic universe similar to Marvel’s. However, it’s unlikely that this will occur because adaptations often need to take creative liberties with the source material to fit the chosen medium. Additionally, any adaptation of Dune must grapple with its reputation for complexity. The prequels further delve into the intricacies that sci-fi fans are willing to tolerate. At times, simplifying certain details can make the series more appealing to a wider audience.
Where does Dune take place?
Primarily, except for a few instances, the storyline of “Dune” unfolds on the desolate planet of Arrakis. The unique environmental and geographical features of this planet play crucial roles in both the novel and film. The name “Dune” is actually a term used by the native Fremen to refer to Arrakis. Frank Herbert, the author, drew inspiration for this work from his experiences as an ecological consultant in Vietnam and Pakistan. An article about sand dunes in Oregon served as part of the foundation for the novel. These background experiences significantly influenced Herbert’s creation of “Dune”. He painstakingly developed the central planet with a level of detail that far surpasses typical science fiction worlds. Every intricate detail works together to illustrate the survival of human life on such an inhospitable desert world. The “Dune” franchise occasionally ventures beyond Arrakis, but its core remains deeply rooted on this desolate planet.
Where will Dune: Prophecy focus?
In our new version of “Dune,” titled “Dune: Prophecy,” the main story won’t unfold on the planet Arrakis. Instead, we’ll preserve the franchise’s name and use brief flash-forwards or references to its signature spice to hint at its desert origins. This series will broaden our exploration of the broader Dune universe.
Wallach IX
In the opening sequences of “Dune: Prophecy“, the action unfolds on Wallach IX, the native planet of the Sisterhood. Although it’s not extensively detailed in the original “Dune“, Wallach IX gains significant importance in the expanded series. It serves as a pivotal meeting point for various factions aiming to dethrone Paul Atreides following the events of the first novel. In the extended version, Wallach IX emerges as the main stronghold of the Sisterhood. The Bene Gesserit order, which would later evolve, originated on a planet called Rossak, characterized by its hazardous atmosphere that produced a drug similar to spice melange. This substance enabled women to unlock psychic abilities, eventually leading to the formation of the Sisterhood. After the Butlerian Jihad, Rossak became almost uninhabitable, causing the Sisterhood to migrate to Wallach IX where they established their educational institution. The majority of Bene Gesserit sisters received their training on Wallach IX, and the massive castle housed a protective shield system that ensured their safety for generations.
Salusa Secundus
In the 2021 movie Dune, a once-magnificent world makes a fleeting appearance, showcasing only ominous black skies and the vast fleet of the Emperor’s Sardaukar warriors. However, the prequel series Prophecy offers a glimpse of its former glory. Salusa Secundus was the home planet of House Corrino, a family that ruled the Imperium for numerous generations. Though beautiful, it was an unforgiving world with extreme temperatures and dangerous wildlife. Eventually, House Corrino abandoned Salusa Secundus for a paradise called Kaitain. Over time, Salusa Secundus transformed into a penal colony, housing those who broke the Emperor’s laws. Its brutal environment served as the perfect breeding ground for the creation of the elite Sardaukar soldiers.
Lankiveil
On Lankiveil, a chilly water-dominated world, lies an essential cosmic export – whale fur. The planet’s significance in the narrative of Prophecy becomes evident early on, with House Harkonnen leveraging this resource to climb out of exile and into power. Intriguingly, they amassed their fortune from the whale fur market, a seemingly impossible achievement that sets the stage for the series. The very first episode of Prophecy introduces a character who petitions the Emperor about the value and potential of whale fur.
Caladan
In the Dune: Prophecy series so far, the original planet of House Atreides hasn’t made an appearance yet, but it could be introduced later. Fans might recall it from the initial scenes of the 2021 movie. The world of Caladan is rich in water and quite lush, presenting a significant change for Paul Atreides when he and his family travel to Arrakis. Given that Keiran Atreides, the only member of the famous Atreides family in the show, seems to be tied to his name, it’s possible that the series could delve into Caladan.
In the upcoming series, Dune: Prophecy, Arrakis remains a part of the story but takes on a more abstract role. Characters who have visited or plan to visit this desert planet are essential to the narrative, yet it no longer holds the central position. Instead, planets such as Salusa Secundus and Wallach IX will take center stage. Lankiveil and Caladan, while still present, may not be as crucial. Exploring further dimensions of the Dune universe promises an exciting journey ahead.
