As a gamer, I’m on edge right now because Chrollo and his Spider crew are in deep trouble. We might not make it through this arc if things continue at this pace. The Phantom Troupe is either facing total annihilation or drastic transformation.

The History of the Phantom Troupe So Far

  • Thieves Hailing From Meteor City
  • The Ones Who Killed The Kurta Clan

The Spider, or The Phantom Troupe, is one of the most adored and well-known groups of villains in HxH, and indeed, across anime. Many fans were already acquainted with them before they appeared, through Kurapika during the Hunter Exam storyline. Togashi provided a comprehensive portrayal of the group during the Yorknew City arc, which heavily focused on them and had them as the primary antagonists.

As an ardent admirer, I’d express it this way: I’m captivated by the Phantom Troupe, a band of extraordinary individuals under the leadership of Chrollo Lucilfer – a masterful Nen user who possesses the unique ability to steal other users’ powers, given specific conditions. This makes Chrollo one of the most formidable characters in the world of HxH. You see, the Phantom Troupe has seen some transformations among its ranks, primarily due to members being eliminated and replaced. However, the founding Spider members were none other than Chrollo, Pakunoda, Feitan, Machi, Uvogin, Nobunaga, Shalnark, Franklin, and Phinks. Initially, Hisoka was also part of the Troupe, but his allegiance shifted when he betrayed them, as his sole motivation for joining was to engage in combat with Chrollo.

The Phantom Troupe was established as a response to the tragic demise of Sarsa, a young girl who had been friends with its members. She was abducted, tormented, and murdered, an incident that has driven the Troupe to become a band of thieves, targeting individuals connected to Sarsa’s death ever since. Additionally, they are infamous for their ruthless annihilation of the Kurta clan, which includes Kurapika, leading him on his current path. Notably, Kurapika has taken the lives of two original members of the Troupe, Uvogin and Pakunoda.

During the current Succession Contest arc, Hisoka has the opportunity to engage in a long-awaited battle against Chrollo. Their previous encounter ended with Chrollo’s victory, thanks to his meticulous preparation and newly acquired Skill Hunter abilities. Despite meeting an untimely demise, Hisoka was resurrected using Bungee Gum, and swiftly eliminated Shalnark and Kortopi. Now, Hisoka has vowed to eliminate every member of the Spider Troupe, and they are determined to avenge their fallen comrades by pursuing Hisoka.

The Phantom Troupe’s Current Whereabouts

The Spider is on the Black Whale

Following my clash with Chrollo and the tragic loss of Shalnark and Kortopi, our band, the Phantom Troupe, embarked on a journey aboard the Black Whale, setting sail towards the Dark Continent as per the Kakin Empire’s belief. As we traverse this new land, my comrades now consist of Chrollo, Illumi, Shizuku, Feitan, Phinks, Kalluto, Bonolenov, Machi, Franklin, and Nobunaga.

The purpose behind participating in this journey was to acquire some highly significant artifacts – the Kakin national treasures. These artifacts include the Seed Urn, the Zen Buddha, and the Blade of Divine Favor. Until recently, it was unclear why they were interested in these national treasures, but now it’s clear that the objective is to enhance Chrollo’s Nen ability, Skill Hunter. It appears that stealing a national treasure is the prerequisite for this power upgrade, and Chrollo is actively seeking them out.

Simultaneously, some Phantom Troupe members’ locations are known to fans. A trio consisting of Nobunaga, Feitan, and Phinks collaborated for a while with Xi-Yu. They infiltrated the Heil-Ly hideout through the passage opened by the Cha-R mafia family, which had a transmitter within. This group was on their way to the hideout via the said passage. Lately, however, Nobunaga has chosen to part ways and journey solo, while Feitan and Phinks are bound for the hideout.

In case of my demise, one of you could step up and fill my role. There may be instances where a leg’s function becomes more crucial than the head’s. Make the best decision in such situations, as my orders are critical. However, remember that I am not to be prioritized over your own well-being. Our objective is not to preserve any single individual, but rather, ensure the survival of our group, symbolized by the spider. — Chrollo

It’s common knowledge among fans that Bonolenov has been deeply engaged with “HxH” lately. In an attempt to deceive the Xi-Yu, he assumed Hisoka’s identity using his Nen ability, but his plan backfired.

Currently, Bonolenov finds himself in close proximity to the genuine Hisoka, a fact that significantly heightens his personal risk. This is due to Hisoka’s intent to eliminate every member of the Troupe.

The Future of the Phantom Troupe

The Troupe Could Fall Apart after Chrollo’s Death

The Phantom Troupe is presently in a perilous situation, as they are pursuing Hisoka but find themselves becoming the hunted instead. Since his resurrection, Hisoka’s power has significantly increased, making him more challenging to defeat. There’s also a possibility that Hisoka is immune to conventional methods of death. He might be capable of reviving himself using Bungee Gum to restore his heart and lungs. This is why Chrollo is eager to enhance Skill Hunter and obtain a unique and potent ability, although the specific ability he seeks remains undisclosed at this time.

It appears that Chrollo may meet his end during this storyline in an attempt to defeat Hisoka. Given the opportunity, he could potentially succeed with Hisoka’s ability, but should they cross paths before that point, it’s unlikely he would emerge victorious.

As a gamer, I’d say Chrollo’s got the edge against Hisoka, but that doesn’t mean the same for the rest of the Spiders. If they dare tangle with him, they’ll go down fast and hard – and from what I see, they’re eager to do just that.

Regardless of my fate, the concept alone of the spider I’ve crafted is enough to strike terror in any heart! – Chrollo Lucifero

In this current storyline, it’s almost certain that Hisoka will defeat some Spiders, with Bonolenov being a likely early target. Right now, Bonolenov is quite near to Himoka, and given their current standing, Bonolenov stands little chance against Hisoka in a fight.

If Chrollo were to kill Hisoka but perish himself, the Phantom Troupe could appoint a new leader, however, the Spider may disintegrate due to the chaos that ensues. The Spider can operate without Chrollo, but they might lack clear objectives. Fans should remember that Kurapika is on the Black Whale and if he encounters the Spider, it could spell trouble for them, given his immense power against them. Furthermore, the Spider must confront not only Kurapika, but also Hisoka, and potentially the Xi-Yu following Bonolenov’s actions against one of their members.
