Nintendo Releases New Switch 2 Console Update for April 2026

Nintendo has released a new system update, version 22.1.0, for both the original Switch and the Switch 2. While this update doesn’t add any big new features, Nintendo recommends downloading and installing it as soon as you can.

As a Switch gamer, I’m used to Nintendo dropping system updates to keep things running smoothly and improve performance. But sometimes, these updates really shake things up for games! The big one recently was version 22.0.0 in late March 2026. It added something called Handheld Boost Mode to the Switch 2, and it’s pretty cool – it lets you play Switch games in 1080p while using the handheld mode on the Switch 2. It does drain the battery faster, but a lot of my favorite Switch games look way better because of it.

Nintendo’s Latest System Firmware Update Is Now Available

A new update, version 22.1.0, is now available for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 consoles. If your console is connected to the internet, the update should download and install automatically, requiring a restart. This update focuses on improving the overall stability of the system and likely fixes some bugs, but it doesn’t add any major new features.

A new update for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 arrived right before the launch of Pokemon Champions. This highly anticipated free-to-play game is a battle simulator and will be the official home for the Pokemon Video Game Championships (VGC). Pokemon Champions will be available on Nintendo consoles starting April 8th, with a mobile version coming in 2026. Because the game is played online, Nintendo recommends updating your Switch or Switch 2 to version 22.1.0 to ensure a smooth experience.

April is a Busy Month for Nintendo Switch Players

April will bring new games to both the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2, including Pokemon Champions. On April 16th, players can try out the unique life simulation game Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, with a free demo available to download. The next day, April 17th, Capcom will release Pragmata on all major platforms, including the Switch 2. It will be interesting to see how well Pragmata performs on Nintendo’s new console compared to other systems, especially with support from third-party developers.

Starting April 12th, Nintendo will be offering a deal on the Switch 2 at retailers like Amazon and Walmart. To get the discount, you’ll need to purchase it with either a physical or digital copy of Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2. The bundle is expected to cost around $499, but prices and stock may vary, so it’s best to check with your preferred store.
