Zelda Series Co-Developer Comments on Future of the Franchise

Monolith Soft, the development team owned by Nintendo, recently shared details about their contributions to The Legend of Zelda series and gave a glimpse into what they’re working on next. The Legend of Zelda franchise has been incredibly important to Nintendo since 1986, second only to the Mario games. For four decades, the series has delivered some of the most highly-rated games of all time, including classics like A Link to the Past on the SNES and more recent hits like Breath of the Wild.

Fans have been wondering what’s next for the Zelda series. 2023 brought us the expansive open-world adventure The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, followed by the more traditional Echoes of Wisdom in 2024 and the action-focused Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment in 2025. There’s a lot of talk about a remake of Ocarina of Time possibly coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 this year, but Nintendo hasn’t officially announced it yet.

Monolith Soft’s Future With Zelda

Monolith Soft recently launched a website sharing details about their work on The Legend of Zelda games. They first began collaborating with Nintendo on Skyward Sword in 2011, a few years after Nintendo acquired the company in 2007. Since then, Monolith Soft has continued to support the Zelda franchise while also developing the Xenoblade series. The new website explains their contributions to A Link Between Worlds, Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom.

Monolith Soft’s website confirms they’ll keep supporting future Zelda games, but doesn’t say what they’re currently working on. One possibility is that they’re helping with the rumored remake of Ocarina of Time. However, Nintendo often collaborates with Grezzo on Zelda titles – Grezzo previously developed the 3DS version of Ocarina of Time. So, it’s possible Grezzo is handling the remake while Monolith Soft focuses on the next major installment after Tears of the Kingdom.

Nintendo usually likes to keep its development teams secret for as long as possible. Fans often make educated guesses about which studios are working on a game, but Nintendo doesn’t usually confirm it until the game is finished. Because of this, it’s possible we won’t find out what Zelda game Monolith Soft is developing until after it’s already out.
