As a long-time follower of One Piece, I can confidently say that the world created by Eiichiro Oda is nothing short of breathtaking in its complexity and richness. From the Straw Hat on Luffy’s head to the ancient weapons hidden beneath the oceans, each piece of this intricate puzzle adds depth to the narrative and keeps us, the fans, hooked.
In the popular series called One Piece, the central mystery revolves around an item whose specific characteristics remain obscure, but it is known for certain that it’s a tangible artifact. After the death of Gol D. Roger, whose execution was meant to discourage piracy, some ironically chose to become pirates in pursuit of this enigmatic object, along with the treasure left by Roger.
Among numerous pirates, Monkey D. Luffy aims to achieve the title of Pirate King. It seems that Roger’s discovery of the One Piece granted him this ambition, which explains why so many are after it. However, it is not the only significant artifact mentioned in the story. Here are some other crucial elements unveiled throughout the plot.
5 Golden Bell
The Light of Shandora
Kalgara, an ancestor of Wyper and a warrior from Shandoria, detailed that the Golden Bell served multiple functions. It announced their presence to the world, symbolized the home of their forefathers, and demonstrated their bravery against intruders. Gol D. Roger had Kozuki Oden engrave a message on this artifact when they discovered it. More recently, Luffy hurled Enel into this item, hoping that Mont Blanc Cricket, a descendant of Noland, a friend of Kalgara, would hear it. However, this action also caused the destruction of the tower where it was kept.
The bell rang once more as a gesture of gratitude towards the Straw Hats, who had hastily departed from the island before the Shandorians could express their thanks. Since then, after the timeskip, the bell has been brought back to its pristine state and freed from the vines that previously entwined it.
4 Poneglyphs
Ancient Inscriptions
These massive stone monuments hold ancient, untranslated historical information. Only two people alive can read them: Nico Robin, a scholar who miraculously survived the Ohara Massacre; and Kozuki Sukiyaki, a descendant of their creators. It is rumored that these steles are indestructible, possibly because if they were not, the World Government would have already destroyed them due to their importance.
At present, these cube-shaped structures come in three distinct versions: the Historical Poneglyphs, which as their title suggests, contain both historical messages and information about ancient times; the Instructional Poneglyphs guide readers towards the historical ones; lastly, there are four red-hued Poneglyphs instead of the usual dark blue variety, known as Road Poneglyphs. These special Poneglyphs serve as a path to Laugh Tale, a place believed to hold the legendary One Piece treasure.
Additionally, there’s the Rio Poneglyph, a compilation of nine separate Poneglyph symbols. This artifact is said to hold the genuine account of the world’s past, encompassing the secret “Void Century” that has led to the deaths of those daring enough to investigate it.
3 Ancient Weapons
Weapons of Mass Destruction
During the Great War, it appears that Pluton, Poseidon, and Uranus have been instrumental in the ongoing increase of sea levels. Joy Boy seems to have played a role in their conservation, although the motives behind this are yet to be clarified. Various ambitious individuals aim to acquire one or more of these artifacts, regarding them as a means to intimidate potential adversaries and consolidate power.
Pluton
Long ago, at Water 7, a battleship known as Pluton, infamously titled the “World’s Worst Battleship,” was constructed. Legend has it that this vessel possesses the power to obliterate entire islands with a single blast, currently lying dormant beneath Wano’s Mt. Fuji. Deceitfully persuading the Five Elders, Spandam secured permission to retrieve Pluton’s blueprints, ostensibly for defensive purposes. In reality, however, his intentions were malicious: Spandam aimed to rebuild Pluton with the ultimate goal of overthrowing the World Government. For generations, these blueprints have been safeguarded and passed down among shipwrights in Water 7.
Among Franky and Iceburg, Tom served as their last mentor. The main objective for Cipher Pol 9’s infiltration of Water 7 was Spandam’s mission to obtain the blueprints. Unfortunately for Spandam, Franky managed to destroy those blueprints, thereby hindering the government from developing any immediate response to the ancient weapon.
Poseidon
Poseidon is not actually a mermaid princess, but rather a figure who has power over the mighty Sea Kings, colossal marine creatures that dwell in every ocean across the world. The extent of this control can bring about either devastating consequences or saving grace, depending on whose orders the Sea Kings choose to obey, thus holding tremendous influence on the fate of the globe.
In the present form, Poseidon is depicted as Shirahoshi, the princess from the underwater kingdom of Ryugu. She is distantly related to an earlier mermaid who possessed special abilities. As a youngster, Shirahoshi found it hard to master her powers, unknowingly summoning sea kings with her cries. However, when her realm was threatened, she demonstrated a higher level of control over these powers.
Uranus
Uranus is missing at the moment, but it probably possesses the capacity for damage similar to its counterparts. During his journeys with the Straw Hat Pirates, Caribou discovered every weapon he encountered and shared this knowledge with the Blackbeard Pirates. This suggests that Captain Teach and his crew will strive to acquire these weapons in the future.
2 The Empty Throne
A Hollow Symbol
The legendary Empty Throne stands in the heart of our world, a symbol of equality enforced by the World Government that has endured for centuries. During the grand Levely event, many gather around it, yet none, not even the Five Elders or any other individual, are permitted to claim its summit. Encircling this colossal throne are 19 weapons, originally belonging to the 19 rulers who transformed into World Nobles. Conspicuously missing among them is Nefertari Lili’s weapon.
In reality, the throne is held by a secretive figure known as Imu, who governs the world through the Five Elders. To preserve the facade that the World Government is a fair and democratic entity, not ruled by one individual, this being’s existence is kept hidden. The character Cobra was killed due to his revelation of Imu’s identity, while Sabo also encountered attempts to silence him after discovering the truth. The empty throne and the secrets it conceals are crucial pieces of information that will help unveil the true workings of the World Government.
1 Roger’s Straw Hat
Currently Atop Luffy’s Head
Initially, Gol D. Roger wore this straw hat when he was just starting out as a pirate apprentice. He later passed it on to Shanks, one of his sailors. Later, Shanks let a young Monkey D. Luffy use it temporarily, expecting he’d return the straw hat once he became a “great pirate.” Over time, this hat came to symbolize both Luffy and his crew. Due to its connection to Shanks, who had been Roger’s captain, the hat holds deep emotional significance for Luffy. Shanks has often pointed out similarities between his protege and the legendary Roger.
It appears that the historical importance of the hat might be more substantial than initially assumed. The massive frozen straw hat, which can be found in Mary Geoise, has been observed being examined by Imu. As for now, neither its relevance nor its connection to Roger’s hat have been clarified.
