10 Weakest Shonen Protagonists, Ranked

Many popular anime aimed at young boys, often called shonen, feature incredibly powerful main characters. Think of Son Goku from Dragon Ball, Luffy from One Piece, or Yuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen. These heroes are far beyond the strength of regular people, who typically play smaller roles as observers, those affected by conflict, or just part of the scenery.

Despite the common image of powerful heroes, many shonen anime actually feature protagonists who aren’t particularly strong. These characters don’t have amazing powers like super strength or magic – they might have a very small, subtle ability, or they rely on their intelligence and physical fitness. However, even these qualities aren’t usually beyond what you’d expect from typical shonen heroes.

Baki Hanma (Baki the Grappler)

Baki Hanma is an incredibly skilled martial artist, pushing the boundaries of human strength. He’s dedicated to becoming even stronger, battling tough opponents, and ultimately defeating his unbelievably powerful father, Yujiro.

Baki has consistently overcome incredibly skilled martial artists throughout his training. With each victory, he gets closer to being the best. However, even with his amazing strength and skill, Baki can’t compete with the truly powerful characters in other action series, whose abilities far surpass his own impressive feats.

Ippo Makunouchi (Hajime no Ippo)

Ippo Makunouchi seems like a typical, defenseless teenager at first. His gentle face and kind eyes make him a target for bullies. But beneath that innocent exterior, he’s secretly strong and well-trained, with a surprisingly muscular build.

Underestimating Ippo would be a big mistake. While he seems mild-mannered, he’s an incredibly powerful boxer with quick reflexes and amazing endurance – qualities that have won him championships and the admiration of other fighters. Like many strong characters, though, Ippo still has realistic human limitations.

Ranma Saotome (Ranma ½)

Ranma Saotome’s fighting style is famous for being all over the place, adapting to any situation, and being really good at both attacking and defending. He’s such a talented martial artist that no one in the series can consistently beat him in a one-on-one fight.

Even Ranma’s biggest rival, Ryoga, consistently loses to him in battle, which only makes Ryoga angrier. On top of that, Ranma can change genders, giving him a surprising advantage and letting him outsmart his enemies.

Ranma Saotome is impressively strong and skilled in martial arts, but he wouldn’t stand a chance against the incredibly powerful heroes from other popular action series who can control reality or possess god-like strength.

Senku (Dr. Stone)

In the anime and manga Dr. Stone, Senku isn’t physically strong, but he has an incredible intellect. This intelligence is essential for his survival in a world after a global catastrophe. Without his smarts and ability to invent things, Senku would be just an average person unable to cope with the challenges around him.

In Dr. Stone, Senku’s incredible intelligence allows him to achieve amazing things. While he easily overcomes challenges with his inventions, a straight-up physical fight would be a much tougher battle for him.

Conan Edogawa (Case Closed)

When Shinichi Kudo crossed paths with the Black Organization, he was mysteriously turned into a child. This makes him easily targeted by criminals and dangerous adults who won’t hesitate to take advantage of his small size. While he’s still a brilliant detective, his new form has significantly weakened his physical strength and abilities.

Because Conan is so small, he’s quicker and more agile than most adults. This surprising ability helps him escape from danger and chase down criminals, including those in the Black Organization. However, being a child also means he has physical weaknesses he constantly needs to overcome.

Takemichi Hanagaki (Tokyo Revengers)

Takemichi Hanagaki is determined to save his friends, which is commendable. However, he often loses fights and relies on others, highlighting that he’s generally weaker than most of the fighters in Tokyo Revengers.

Takemichi consistently loses fights throughout the story, getting beaten up even by people who later become his allies. Because of this, many viewers don’t have a lot of respect for him, despite his attempts to fix the past and save his friends. In a show full of tough characters, Takemichi’s constant defeats make him seem like he doesn’t quite fit in.

Yukihira Soma (Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma)

I’ve seen a lot of cooks, but inside that kitchen, Yukihira Soma really stands out. He’s incredibly talented – he can juggle several complicated dishes simultaneously and still make them all taste fantastic, at least for most of what I’ve witnessed in Food Wars.

Before attending the renowned Totsuki Academy, Soma worked at his family’s diner, building up a strong work ethic and physical stamina. Once at Totsuki, he continued to push his limits, improving both his cooking and his physical endurance to succeed in the challenging environment.

Despite being incredibly skilled in the kitchen and creating amazing food, Soma is ultimately just a regular person without any special physical talents. He’s physically fit for kitchen work – he can chop ingredients, stand for extended periods, and handle the demands of cooking – but these abilities only make him exceptional when it comes to food.

Yugi Muto (Yu-Gi-Oh!)

Duelling against Yugi Muto usually means a swift loss. Because of the Millennium Puzzle, he can transform into Yami Yugi or Dark Yugi, giving him a huge advantage and almost ensuring he wins.

While Yugi Muto is a skilled duelist, he’s not physically strong. Compared to his friends, he has less stamina, endurance, and overall strength. He’s smaller in build and doesn’t practice sports or combat training like his rival, Kaiba. This lack of physical training makes him an easier target for opponents who are also strong and athletic.

Anya Forger (Spy x Family)

I’m absolutely fascinated by Anya Forger! She’s not naturally gifted, you see – she gained her powers through some pretty intense experiments. What’s incredible is that she’s a telepath, able to sense when danger is near and instantly know if someone’s lying. But it’s not about controlling people, sadly. She can only read minds, which makes her ability more about protecting herself and gathering information – a super useful skill, if you ask me!

Anya Forger is still a child who isn’t very strong physically, so she can’t defend herself in a fight. Even though she manages to get by in Spy x Family, she needs a lot of help from her adoptive parents and her dog, Bond, to stay safe.

AE3803 (Cells at Work!)

In the series Cells at Work, being a red blood cell is tough and risky for AE3803. She’s unable to protect herself and must depend on white blood cells and even platelets to keep her safe.

Her job is simply to carry essential supplies, like oxygen and nutrients, throughout the body, which unfortunately leaves her unprotected against threats like viruses and bacteria. This is true for all the red blood cells in the story – they’re vital to keeping things running, but surprisingly defenseless.
