As a die-hard fan of Japanese animation, I can hardly contain my excitement for Sung Hoo Park’s new series “Bullet/Bullet” debuting on Disney+ next summer! With his decade-long dedication to crafting this masterpiece, it’s no wonder why the man behind “Jujutsu Kaisen” has become a household name in the anime world.

Sung Hoo Park, who directed the popular “Jujutsu Kaisen” anime series, is currently developing an original animation exclusively for Disney+. Not too long ago, Disney conducted the Disney APAC Content Showcase 2024 in Singapore, unveiling numerous upcoming productions, among which are some Japanese titles.

Disney has been collaborating with creators from the Asia-Pacific region since 2021, and the APAC Showcase has been an annual event starting from 2022. Contrary to its name, they also reveal sneak peeks and previews for shows produced outside of the APAC region. However, a significant portion of their focus is on introducing new titles originating from the Asian-Pacific region to the general public.

Sung Hoo Park’s upcoming series is named “Bullet” and will premiere exclusively on Disney+. He has been developing the storyline for a decade now. A sneak peek trailer was released, showcasing an exciting urban rally tale featuring CG cars. Much like modern anime, it seems to blend CG technology with traditional 2D animation. Take a look:

Additionally, key team members were disclosed: Aki Kindaichi, known for “Umamsume: Cinderella Gray,” oversees the scriptwriting; Hidetaka Tenjin, who has worked on numerous “Macross” series, handles both concept and mechanical designs; while Shin Misawa, famous for Initial D, will direct the car action sequences.

Sung Hoo Park’s Career in Japanese Animation

A Macross fan going professional

Sung Hoo Park’s fascination with anime ignited during his elementary school years, following his exposure to the series “Macross.” This show is set to appear on Disney+ at some point. According to the MyAnimeList database, Park’s initial involvement in an anime production was in 2005, where he handled in-between animation processes for “Tide-Line Blue.” His first stint as a director in animation occurred in the 26th episode of “Fairy Tail.

He has worked on various key animation projects or assisted in direction, with his first major directorial role being “Garo: Vanishing Line” in 2017. In 2020, he also directed “The God of High School,” one of Crunchyroll’s original series and an adaptation from a manhwa. His most renowned work, the anime adaptation of “Jujutsu Kaisen,” premiered both in Japan and internationally during the same year.

The acclaimed anime series, Jujutsu Kaisen, catapulted Sung Hoo Park into prominence. His skilled and inventive direction played a significant role in the anime’s triumph (with numerous other talented animators contributing as well), leaving fans awestruck by the exceptional animation quality. Later, Sung Hoo Park directed the movie, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, and has since been offered opportunities to direct in other popular franchises.

He oversaw the animation adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s “Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation” series (streamable on Netflix), and also took charge as director and storyboard artist for the original version of “Ninja Kamui” anime, which is now accessible on Max.

The animated series Bullet/Bullet, which is slated for release in Summer 2025 on Disney+, was meticulously crafted over a span of ten years by its director, Sun-Hoo Park, who has previously worked on Jujutsu Kaisen.
