It’s easy to miss out on some great games released in recent years, especially when bigger titles grab all the attention. Players often focus on the newest, most hyped AAA games and overlook smaller releases. This can be due to the price, if it’s part of a franchise they’re unfamiliar with, or if the gameplay seems difficult to pick up.
Both Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist and The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon are recent releases that are as enjoyable as many of the industry’s top games. While they may not be flawless action titles, they’re incredibly fun to play, just like the other games mentioned.

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound
Two Souls, One Body
Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is a 2D action platformer inspired by the classic NES Ninja Gaiden games, but with some updated features. The game lets you play as Kenji, a ninja from the Hayabusa clan, and Kumori, a female ninja who rivals the Dragon Ninja clan. A surprising event causes them to merge into one body, and players can switch between controlling Kenji and Kumori at any time. Each character has unique skills – Kenji excels in close combat, while Kumori is stronger from a distance.
The game lets you gather items and use them to improve your character by purchasing upgrades. You’ll navigate a world map that provides mission details, and you won’t be forced to follow a strict path. The gameplay is excellent, with smooth action and platforming, and the pixel art is beautiful. It also includes helpful features to make it easier for more players to enjoy. While Ninja Gaiden 4 marked the series’ comeback in 2025, fans of the franchise shouldn’t overlook Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, as many consider it to be a superior game.
Ender Magnolia: Bloom In The Mist
A Metroidvania Persona
Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist is a 2D action-adventure game—a Metroidvania—with RPG features. You play as Lilac, who has lost her memory. She can connect with creatures called Homunculi, using their abilities to fight enemies and navigate the world. Think of it like the Persona system, but in a fast-paced action game.
Players gain abilities like grappling and air dashing, which let them explore the map in new, non-linear ways. Enemies, called Homunculi, have different attack styles – some are best fought up close, while others can be taken down from a distance. Most can also be upgraded to improve their attacks. Like the best Metroidvania games, Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist tells a captivating story through its beautiful visuals and the interactions you have within its world.
Absolum
A Brawler With A Roguelike Twist
Absolum is a classic beat ‘em up game with elements of roguelikes, meaning each playthrough is different. You start by choosing one of two characters, with more becoming available as you play. Galandra is a strong, magic-wielding swordfighter, and Karl is a quick, close-combat fighter who also uses a gun. Each character has standard attacks and special abilities that have cooldowns. During a run, you can find temporary power-ups, and between runs, you can permanently improve your characters in the game’s central hub.
Unlike many roguelike games, Absolum doesn’t change its levels drastically with each new attempt. You’ll revisit the same areas, but the game keeps things fresh by letting you make choices that lead to different paths and locations. This is similar to how Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara worked, and that game may have been an influence on Absolum – it’s a classic beat ’em up! While these branching paths are a nice touch, the game’s most impressive feature is its beautiful, hand-drawn art style.
The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Beyond The Horizon
The Best Of Both RPG Worlds
The Trails series can be difficult for new players to get into because of the long game titles and complicated connections between entries. The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon continues the story from The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak 2, which might be confusing for those unfamiliar with the series. However, the game does a good job of catching newcomers up to speed and introduces some interesting RPG design choices. For example, when exploring dungeons, players can choose their own path using a map that divides the area into sections.
As a fan, I’m really excited about how open the world feels in The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon! You can explore big areas with enemies moving around naturally, and then choose how you want to fight – you can jump right into fast-paced action combat, or switch to a more strategic, turn-based style. There’s so much to unlock and upgrade with all the characters, gear, and abilities, which makes playing super rewarding. It can seem a little overwhelming at first, but honestly, this is the perfect time to get into the Trails series!
BlazBlue Entropy Effect
From Fighter To Roguelike
BlazBlue Entropy Effect is a fast-paced, 2D action game inspired by the BlazBlue fighting series, but with a roguelike twist. Players select a character – with many more to unlock – and battle through challenging levels. Each character boasts a unique fighting style; for example, Ragna wields a massive sword and favors strength, while Noel is quick and uses powerful guns.
The game features guest characters, including the hero from Dead Cells. Each playthrough offers randomly generated levels packed with monsters and temporary power-ups, like new abilities and stat boosts. The gameplay loop involves progressing as far as you can, dying, and starting over. The action is smooth and looks great, and you don’t need any prior knowledge of BlazBlue to enjoy BlazBlue Entropy Effect. It’s a fun 2D roguelike worth trying out.
