As a seasoned gamer with memories of countless CoD nights etched into my mind, I can say that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has indeed been a refreshing change for the series. The return to form in the campaign, core multiplayer, and Zombies experiences is truly commendable. However, as much as I’ve enjoyed the new maps, there’s no denying that the current pool could use a bit of spice.
The latest release, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, has brought about a significant shift in direction for the established franchise. Developer Treyarch has taken some daring steps that deviate from the norm of what fans have grown accustomed to. Critics and players alike are viewing the campaign, core multiplayer, and Zombies modes as a revitalization of the series, but there’s always potential for further refinement.
It’s no surprise that there’s a lot of additional content planned for the multiplayer and Zombies modes of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, including new maps, weapons, and more, even this early in its release. However, one major concern with Black Ops 6 is the divisive map selection in its multiplayer mode, which has been a significant issue. To address this, the game might need to consider re-introducing maps from past Black Ops games, although this approach could be contentious, as it was for the recent Modern Warfare trilogy reboots.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Could Benefit a Lot From a Smart Approach to Map Remasters
In recent times, the Call of Duty series has faced significant criticism for frequently reusing old content, peaking with the release of Modern Warfare 3 in 2023. The rapid development timeline of this game seemed to negatively affect the originality of its multiplayer maps, as the launch collection was entirely made up of remastered maps from the 2009 version of Modern Warfare 2.
Initially, when the 2009 map collection in this pool was released, it included some well-known maps, but the absence of new maps from Modern Warfare 3 at the time of launch led to significant backlash. This concern has persisted throughout the series’ recent emphasis on the MW reboot. For instance, even the 2022 release of MW2 brought back many pre-existing maps like Dome and Shipment as part of its post-launch updates.
The absence of unique identity, exacerbated by the franchise’s shift towards a central “Call of Duty” hub for accessing all new games, posed a significant problem for titles like MW2 and MW3. Treyarch might have overstepped in their departure from remastering classic maps with the design strategy for Black Ops 6. Before its launch, fans were thrilled at the announcement that Black Ops 6 would include 11 brand new 6v6 maps, although these maps have since received their own share of criticism.
A Few Remastered Maps Can Take the Heat Away From Black Ops 6’s Launch Experiences
In contrast to traditional three-lane designs that are common in many Call of Duty maps, several key maps for Black Ops 6 deviate from this pattern, leaving some players feeling that it disrupts the rhythm and overall gameplay of an otherwise fun multiplayer experience. However, as more maps will be introduced to Black Ops 6 throughout its post-launch seasons, Tryearch has the opportunity to pick a few maps from the broader Black Ops series for remastering in these upcoming releases.
If done judiciously, Black Ops 6 can skillfully steer clear of the past critiques leveled against MW3 and MW2, their heavy emphasis on old content. By introducing the legendary Nuketown map to its multiplayer, Black Oops 6 has already demonstrated this capability. Famous maps such as Firing Range, Hijacked, and WMD could be effortlessly integrated into Black Ops 6, alleviating some strain from the original title’s maps. This way, the rich history of the sub-franchise can be honored without overshadowing the primary objective: providing a fresh and thrilling experience for fans.
