The launch of Pokemon Champions has been rough, with a major bug causing players to lose their Pokemon, on top of other problems. While the game has faced criticism for its limited Pokedex, uninspired gameplay, and missing features, losing hours of progress on trained Pokemon is a particularly serious issue.
Everyone expected Pokemon Champions to be the future of competitive Pokemon battling, eventually replacing Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. However, the launch hasn’t gone smoothly. Competitive player Justin Carris has publicly shared how a glitch is costing him time and money. He explained he invested significant effort into preparing his Pokemon for the new game, intending to create content and analyze strategies for his coaching business, but currently can’t even play due to the issue. He considers this a major and unacceptable problem.
How the Pokemon Champions Transfer Bug Happens
A problem happens when you try to move Pokémon you’ve collected and trained in Pokémon Home to Pokémon Champions. If you get an error code during the transfer, those Pokémon become unusable. You won’t be able to move them to Pokémon Champions, send them back to Pokémon Home, or even return them to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. They’re essentially stuck and can’t be used in any game.
After an initial error, trying to trade the Pokémon intended for Champions now results in a different error message, incorrectly stating the Pokémon is already in Pokémon Champions. Moving Pokémon back to Scarlet and Violet also fails with yet another error. Pokémon Champions support has advised affected players to try deleting and reinstalling Pokémon Home, clearing the cache in both Pokémon Champions and on their Nintendo Switch, but these steps haven’t resolved the problem. It’s currently unclear if a quick fix is available, or if a solution will be found in the future.
This launch clearly didn’t meet fans’ expectations, especially considering the great year Pokémon has had. 2025 brought exciting news like the announcement of Pokémon Winds and Waves, the Switch release of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the critically acclaimed Pokémon Pokopia, and even Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness on Nintendo Switch Online. Many fans hoped Pokémon Champions would be another strong addition to this lineup, filling a need for competitive battles, but that hasn’t happened.

Look, as a Pokémon fan, I’ve been pretty happy with everything we’ve gotten this year… until Pokémon Champions dropped. Honestly, it’s a huge letdown right now. They’re saying they’ll fix bugs, tweak the content, and generally improve things, and maybe it’ll eventually be the game it was meant to be. But it’s really frustrating for those of us who jumped in on day one.
