‘Overwatch Players Have Stockholm Syndrome’: Bogur Speaks About Deadlock Taking Over

As a long-time Overwatch enthusiast who’s followed Siarhei ‘Bogur’ Alekau’s journey since his early days, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for what’s to come with Deadlock. Bogur’s insights into the hero shooter scene are always enlightening, and his perspective on Overwatch’s potential rivals is particularly intriguing.

DreamHack Stockholm is coming to a close today, leaving behind a wealth of insights from the numerous creators and professional players who attended. In an exclusive chat, Jake Lucky and Hunter Grooms of Gaming World Media spoke with Siarhei ‘Bogur’ Alekau, a highly recognized figure in the Overwatch community.

In an open discussion about the future of hero shooter games, Bogur eagerly shared his thoughts, focusing particularly on the game Deadlock.

Deadlock Will ‘100%’ Surpass Overwatch

Despite garnering a massive following and securing distinct accomplishments within the Overwatch community, it doesn’t necessarily imply that Bogur is deeply passionate about the game.

During an interview with Gaming World Media at DreamHack Stockholm, Bogur openly discussed various gaming titles, expressing the viewpoint that Overwatch players often struggle to completely switch to another game.

It seems to me that dedicated Overwatch players exhibit a behavior similar to Stockholm Syndrome, as they often threaten to quit and express interest in other games, only to return time and again. Among potential rivals, Marvel Rivals stands out as the most comparable title to Overwatch, given that Deadlock offers a significantly distinct gaming experience.

It seems to me that all these games are enjoyable, and I’m thrilled to have another game to play aside from Overwatch, as for the past six years, if the meta was repetitive, I found myself limited to playing Overwatch since my audience wasn’t easily adaptable to League of Legends or something similar.

With competing titles surfacing, like Valve’s Deadlock, there are now legitimate contenders to tackle Overwatch’s leading position. Bogur believes that if Valve can deliver on the developing title, it will take over. When asked if he thinks Deadlock will surpass Overwatch, Bogur said:

Absolutely, if executed correctly. There seems to be a widespread belief that Deadlock might be struggling, and this is concerning given that the game hasn’t been released yet.

In the future, I anticipate a turning point where the streaming platform will experience a significant surge, much like how Overwatch did when it first launched. This event will impact all streamers, from those with modest audiences of 1k or 2k viewers, to the professional players boasting viewer counts in the tens of thousands.

The process for Deadlock will remain similar as they are in the process of refining it, introducing modifications, assuming certain risks, and actively seeking community feedback to create an optimal user experience.

When queried about his trust in the developers, Bogur expressed appreciation towards Blizzard, yet acknowledged that he’s still engaged with their game due to lack of a more appealing alternative at present. Similar to other hero shooter enthusiasts, he’s keeping an eye on Deadlock as it develops, but for now, he’s focused on Marvel Rivals in the near term.
