Untouchable Shonen Anime That Need a Remake

The shonen genre has a lot of fantastic anime series. Because it’s so popular, studios constantly release new shows to keep fans happy. However, newer isn’t necessarily better – sometimes older series are more memorable and fun to watch.

The only real drawback is the animation style. Fans of newer action anime (shonen) are accustomed to widescreen (16:9), but this older anime uses a much narrower format (4:3). The simplest solution would be to create a new version of the anime.

6. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was incredibly popular, consistently ranking as the top anime on MyAnimeList for a long time. It wasn’t just loved by fans either – critics also gave it high praise. Many consider it to be nearly flawless, making it a perfect series to watch all the way through.

Although it first came out in 2009, a remake of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood wouldn’t be a bad idea. Now that Bones has finished My Hero Academia, they might be searching for a new project, and this anime would be a great fit.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood follows the Elric brothers as they attempt to revive their mother using a dangerous and forbidden technique. Unfortunately, their efforts go wrong, and they face severe consequences as a result.

5. Great Teacher Onizuka

Great Teacher Onizuka (G.T.O.) was a hugely popular anime in the 1990s. It’s a funny and dramatic series with compelling stories in every episode, making it very engaging. However, it feels a bit dated now, and a new version would be fantastic.

Great Teacher Onizuka tells the story of Eikichi Onizuka, a former gang member who unexpectedly becomes a teacher. He finds it difficult to adapt to his new, normal life, but dedicates himself to helping his students deal with their problems.

4. Slam Dunk

Slam Dunk is an exciting story originally created as a manga by Takehiko Inoue. As a sports manga focused on basketball, it features intense competition between players. Beyond the action on the court, the story also shows how the characters grow and change as people.

I absolutely love Slam Dunk! It’s about this total rebel, Hanamichi Sakuragi, who’s never played basketball before, but he starts learning to play just to get the attention of a girl he likes. It quickly becomes so much more than that, though! He gets really competitive and ends up battling other amazing rookies to prove he’s the best new talent out there. It’s a seriously inspiring story!

3. Ashita no Joe

Ashita no Joe is widely considered a classic and one of the best sports anime ever made. Even though it first aired in 1970, the story remains captivating and the characters are still compelling today. However, being an older anime, the animation style appears dated by current standards.

Ashita no Joe tells the story of Joe Yabuki and his introduction to boxing through Danpei Tange. However, Joe’s start in the sport is rocky, landing him in a juvenile center right away.

Despite the setback, Joe Yabuki keeps on pushing and slowly begins his ascent to the top.

2. One Piece

The anime series One Piece is adapted from Eiichiro Oda’s popular manga. It began airing in 1999 and has consistently released new episodes every decade – a rare achievement for any show. While the original One Piece anime is still running and remains enjoyable, a remake could further enhance the viewing experience.

The One Piece anime can be slow-paced, especially in the beginning, making it hard to watch at times. A reboot could solve this by streamlining the story and reducing the total number of episodes, potentially attracting more viewers today. The series follows Monkey D. Luffy’s journey as he sails between islands, searching for the legendary treasure known as One Piece and striving to become the Pirate King. Along the way, Luffy encounters numerous obstacles and relies on his loyal crew to help him succeed.

1. Naruto

Naruto is a hugely popular anime that first aired in 2002 and ran for 500 episodes. However, many fans feel the series suffers from a lot of unnecessary filler, especially in the later part, Naruto Shippuden. A remake could address this by cutting the filler and updating the animation quality. Some fans even think a Naruto remake would be more welcome than continuing the new series, Boruto.

The story revolves around Naruto Uzumaki, a young boy who is avoided by most people in his village because of something that happened before he was born. Even though he’s treated like an outcast, Naruto never gives up and constantly works to become stronger. As the story progresses, he faces increasingly powerful enemies, but he always finds a way to overcome them.
