The first episode of Re:Zero Season 4 is now available, and it’s off to a good start! The series quickly addresses unresolved plot points while also hinting at what’s to come. Following the attack by Priestella, Subaru still feels responsible for rescuing Rem and all those affected by the Sin Archbishops.
Even with a few moments that felt a little slow, the first episode of Re:Zero Season 4 is surprisingly good and gets viewers excited for Subaru’s next perilous journey in this new world. After being set in Priestella last season, the story now moves to a desert landscape with vast sand dunes.
Julius Juukulius Lost His Name
Re:Zero Season 4 Tackles Season 3’s Cliffhanger
Season 4 of Re:Zero immediately addresses the ending of Season 3, showing that Julius Juukulius has also had his name stolen by the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony. Subaru is shocked to discover that everyone except him has forgotten Julius. Interestingly, Julius remains aware, making him different from other victims, while Rem is still unconscious.
Anastasia suggests they travel to the Augria Sand Dunes to seek help from Shaula, a wise sage living in the Pleiades Watch Tower. Shaula might have the answers they need to help Julius and the others, and Subaru and his friends all agreed it’s worth a visit.
Reinhard’s Failed Attempt at Pleaides Watch Tower
The Pleiades Watchtower Has a Mysterious Barrier
Reinhard Van Astrea is incredibly powerful – as the current Sword Saint, he’s one of the strongest characters in Re:Zero. You’d expect someone like him to be able to reach, or even overcome, the Pleaides Watch Tower, either alone or with a team. However, his skill as a Sword Saint doesn’t help him at all when it comes to bypassing the strange barrier protecting the tower.
Reinhard finds that no matter how far he walks towards the watchtower, he can’t actually reach it – it always seems to move further away. This is a major problem Subaru must solve if he wants to get inside and find Shaula.
Subaru Confronts Anastasia
Anastasia’s True Identity Is Revealed
Subaru, Beako, Emilia, Julius, and Anastasia start traveling towards the Augria Sand Dunes and decide to stop and camp for the night. Subaru takes the first watch, guarding the camp while everyone else, except Anastasia, goes to sleep. It’s then that Anastasia speaks with Subaru about Ricardo and his arm, ultimately convincing Subaru that she isn’t who she claims to be – that the Anastasia he’s talking to is an imposter.
Things get heated between Subaru and Anastasia, particularly when she reveals she’s actually Echidna – a magical spirit living inside Anastasia Hoshin’s scarf. This Echidna is different from the one Subaru already knows, so he accidentally starts calling her ‘Eridna’ instead.

Eridna is currently inhabiting Anastasia’s body with Anastasia’s permission, but she’s unable to return control. This is why Eridna accompanies Subaru to the watchtower – to try and fix the situation. This scene differs from the original novel, including having a shorter conversation between the characters. Although the anime did a good job revealing Anastasia’s true identity, the reveal felt hurried and lacked some of the emotional impact it had in the source material.
Subaru Recruits Meili Portroute
Subaru Visits Rem
Before going to the Pleiades Watchtower, Subaru visits Rem, waking her up in the Roswaal Mansion. He also frees Meili Portroute, who had been held captive for a long time and was largely forgotten by viewers until her return in this episode.
Meili’s power over mabeasts can help Subaru and his friends get to the Pleides Watch Tower more safely and with a better plan. Even though she used to be Subaru’s enemy, she quickly agrees to help, making her a new ally – something Julius enjoys teasing Subaru about.

Fans of Rem are treated to a sweet and touching scene between Subaru and Rem. Subaru promises to save her again, wishing she’ll wake up and see him first. Ram seems to enjoy witnessing this moment.
Garfiel Reveals His Vulnerable Side
Near the end of the first episode of Re:Zero Season 4, Garfiel goes to see his mother. He and Mimi chat with Reala, who frequently mentions her husband and their other children. Suddenly, Garfiel becomes overwhelmed with emotion and breaks down, crying as if he’s a child needing his mother. Reala lovingly embraces him, letting him finally express his feelings.
Re:Zero Season 4 Episode 1 Starts Without Action
I was really surprised by the first episode of Re:Zero Season 4! It totally skipped the action and took a much quieter approach, which I actually loved. There weren’t any fights, but it still packed a real emotional punch. Now I’m super excited for episode 2, because it looks like we’ll finally see Subaru, Meili, Rem, and the whole crew – Emilia and Anastasia included – continue their journey towards the Augria Sand Dunes!
