The report indicates that Sony’s upcoming portable device might take a few more years before it hits the market, and there’s a chance the company may choose not to release it at all, according to unnamed sources who prefer to keep the confidential plans undisclosed.
The new development is reportedly expanding upon the concept of PlayStation Portal, moving away from streaming games directly from the console online. Instead, this upcoming device will function as a dedicated console, similar to the Nintendo Switch and its forthcoming successor, with the potential to challenge their market position. Interestingly, Bloomberg’s sources claim that Sony initially intended for the PlayStation Portal to operate as a self-contained system, similar to Valve’s Steam Deck, before it evolved into the streaming device we know today.
Sony declined to comment to Bloomberg on the report.
Apart from Sony’s PlayStation introducing a portable gaming device, it has been revealed that Microsoft is likewise engaged in the development of a handheld console for potential entry into the market. As stated by Xbox leader Phil Spencer, their handheld device remains “several years away” from release.
