Ubisoft Sued Over Return To Office Mandate

As a seasoned gamer and follower of gaming industry news, I’ve seen my fair share of twists and turns. However, the ongoing saga at Ubisoft Barcelona has certainly piqued my interest. Having worked remotely for many years myself, I can empathize with the unions’ concerns about sudden policy changes and the lack of transparency.

In an unexpected turn of events, Ubisoft is currently embroiled in a lawsuit due to their latest office return policies. The unions at Ubisoft Barcelona have filed a suit against the French publishing company.

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the unions representing both AAA and mobile game development teams have requested that Ubisoft implement safeguards for remote working and reconsider their recent modifications to the company’s policies in this regard.

Starting from September, Ubisoft’s new policy requires their staff to work in the office for at least three days every week. Initially, this change was implemented to foster greater creativity and collaboration among team members. Previously, employees had the option to work remotely up to 60% of the time. Additionally, there were some employees who worked fully remotely. However, under the new policy, all staff, including those with previous full-time remote agreements, are expected to abide by these changes.

As reported by the unions through GIBiz, Ubisoft’s changes were made swiftly and with a lack of openness. Furthermore, these adjustments could potentially lead to organizational challenges because offices may not be equipped to handle all remote employees immediately due to unpreparedness.

As a gamer, I’ve been keeping an eye on the situation between the union and Ubisoft. While it seems both sides are eager to talk things over, it’s worth noting that Ubisoft management hasn’t put any proposals on the table before the lawsuit was filed on October 14th.

Ubisoft has yet to comment on the lawsuit.
