As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is a game that stands out from the crowd. The haunting beauty of its post-apocalyptic landscape, reminiscent of games like Fallout, The Last of Us, and Horizon Zero Dawn, is only surpassed by the sheer uniqueness of its setting – a place where anomalies defy physics, and mutants roam free.
The game titled “STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl” boasts a remarkably distinct environment. While its post-apocalyptic landscape may evoke memories of games such as Fallout, The Last of Us, or Horizon, the Zone in STALKER 2 stands out from other gaming worlds with its intriguing twists and turns, offering players unforgettable surprises along the way.
In the vicinity known as “The Exclusion Zone” around the devastated Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant lies the story of STALKER 2 : Heart of Chornobyl. Here, players undertake a seemingly routine mission to restore power and retrieve a mysterious artifact, which Skif, the protagonist, intends to sell for rebuilding his home. However, navigating the Zone isn’t just an ordinary task; it is fraught with terrifying mutants, puzzling anomalies that defy physics, and high levels of radiation. The Zone also holds a deep-rooted history that spans long before players arrive in STALKER 2.
The History of STALKER 2’s Zone Explained
The 1986 Chornobyl Disaster
Prior to the occurrences in 1986, the timeline depicted in the game STALKER closely resembles our own, but there’s a notable difference: In the early 1980s, the Soviet Union constructed research facilities near Pripyat. These research centers were engaged in developing mind-influencing weapons and investigating the Noosphere (an invisible layer surrounding Earth that affects human feelings and thoughts). However, an accident at Reactor 4 of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant disrupted these activities when it malfunctioned, leading to a devastating explosion.
Immediately following the catastrophe, the Soviet Union dispatched a team for cleanup purposes, aiming to contain the spreading radioactivity. Subsequently, they established a 400-square-kilometer restricted area, known as the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone.
The Timeline Begins to Diverge
In 1991, the Soviet Union disintegrated, but some former Soviet scientists opted to carry on with their research deep within the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. Despite efforts by the Ukrainian government to uncover these secretive experiments, they were unable to halt them. By the turn of the millennium, tales of unusual creatures had been circulating throughout Ukraine, with Pripyat emerging as a popular destination for tourists hoping to catch sight of these mythical beings. In 2001, an entire tourist bus vanished mysteriously within the Zone.
The 2006 Chornobyl Disaster and Its Aftermath
In March 2006, a team of ex-scientists from the Soviet Union conducted an unusual test on the Noosphere, aiming to broadcast a wave of influence over people’s minds. However, their trial was cut short, following reports of an intense light emanating from the Chornobyl power plant that nearby residents observed. Curiously, another attempt was made just a month later, but this second try had disastrous consequences.
In this second test, a brilliant light was observed in the sky over Chernobyl, but it was swiftly accompanied by an otherworldly explosion and a 6.9 magnitude earthquake, leading to a tear in the Noosphere. This event subsequently resulted in peculiar occurrences manifesting across the Zone, phenomena that violated established physical laws.
After the test, a large number of the scientists involved managed to make it through unscathed. As the area affected by this event, known as the Zone, grew larger, these surviving scientists divided into two distinct groups. One group aimed at eliminating the rift and purifying the Zone, which they named Clear Sky. The other faction was composed of those who wished to carry on their research within the Zone, focusing on the Noosphere. They developed a shared consciousness, calling themselves C-Consciousness.
The Zone’s frequent Emissions are the necessary release of excess energy from the Noosphere rift.
The Rise of The Stalkers
Over the subsequent years, whispers about the Zone swept rapidly through Ukraine and surrounding nations. Numerous tales suggested a hidden fortune lurked at the Zone’s core, causing individuals eager for wealth to start exploring its dangerous terrain. These bold explorers earned the name Stalkers, with many eventually banding together to create their own groups within the Zone.
