Despite being created by a co-creator of the Just Cause series, the new action-adventure game Samson has received overwhelmingly negative reviews since its release in 2026. The game is currently available on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, and while player opinions are varied, critics have been harsh. The creative director has stated that they are working to fix major bugs and performance problems with ongoing updates and support.
When it was announced last year, the game Samson immediately reminded people of Grand Theft Auto 4. It’s set in Tyndalston, a realistic, fictional city inspired by New York, and offers tough hand-to-hand combat, exciting car chases, and a large open world to explore. However, Samson is a more focused experience than Grand Theft Auto. Players take on different jobs throughout the city to help the main character pay off a debt to some very dangerous people.
Samson Director Addresses Game-Breaking Bugs
Many were excited for Samson because it was created by Christofer Sundberg, a key figure behind the Just Cause series. However, the game has received very negative reviews from both critics and players. Currently, Samson ranks as the third-lowest-rated game of the year on Metacritic, scoring only 48 out of 100. It’s only ahead of Tokyo Scramble (40) and Code Violet (29). While Steam reviews are a bit more forgiving, they’re still generally mixed, with only 53% of over 1,000 user reviews recommending the game.
Many players have reported serious bugs in Samson that stop them from continuing the story. Fortunately, the developers at Liquid Swords plan to keep updating the game, with the next update arriving on Friday, April 10th. Creative director Christofer Sundberg has acknowledged these game-breaking bugs and performance problems are unacceptable, and promises ongoing support to improve the game’s quality, gameplay, and content for both Samson and Tyndalston.
The first update for Samson is available now, ahead of its official release this week. The update, called Liquid Swords, focuses on improving performance, specifically addressing stuttering issues. It also includes fixes for problems with the audio, animations, and graphics processing unit (GPU), as well as bugs that were blocking story progression. The developers at Liquid Swords plan to continue improving Samson with further performance enhancements, gameplay tweaks, and animation fixes. According to the director, Samson will be actively supported for the long term.

Despite receiving significant criticism, the new game Samson isn’t as poorly received as last year’s MindsEye, which currently has a Metacritic score of 28. Samson, the debut title from Build A Rocket Boy (co-founded by former Grand Theft Auto producer Leslie Benzies), has been criticized for issues like bugs, a weak story, uninspired AI, and dull gameplay. The studio has responded by alleging corporate sabotage aimed at damaging their reputation and the launch of MindsEye, and they state a full investigation is in progress.
