Hunter X Hunter: Every Nen Master, According to Togashi

In the anime Hunter x Hunter, Nen is the core power system, and many fans consider it to be exceptionally well-developed and complex. The creator, Yoshihiro Togashi, shared in his notes that Nen users can be grouped into four skill levels: Great, Excellent, Genius, and Master.

According to the creator of the series, only seven characters have been officially established as masters of Nen. While some of these masters are predictable, others might be unexpected. Every type of Nen ability has a master, with the exception of manipulators.

Bisky Kruger

  • Nen: Transmutation

I was really surprised to learn that, according to the author, Bisky Kruger is the only confirmed Transmuter in the world of Hunter x Hunter. She first showed up during the Greed Island arc, and while we knew she was a powerful Nen instructor for Gon and Killua, it’s amazing to find out she’s actually one of the very few masters of Nen with that specific ability. It wasn’t something I necessarily expected from her!

I’ve been observing Bisky, and her Nen ability, ‘Magical Esthetician,’ is surprisingly powerful. It doesn’t look like much at first, but it’s arguably the best healing ability I’ve seen in the series – she can drastically speed up how quickly people recover from injuries, both physical and Nen-related. She’s also capable of fighting, and with the current Succession War Arc unfolding on the Black Whale, I expect we’ll see a lot more of what she can do.

Abengane

  • Nen: Conjuration

Abengane is the only known master of conjuration Nen. This might be a surprise to many Hunter x Hunter fans, as he’s a relatively obscure character. He first appeared during the Greed Island arc as an exorcist, and the Phantom Troupe (Spiders) sought him out hoping he could remove the Judgment Chain Kurapika had placed on their leader, Chrollo.

Abengane is considered one of the most skilled exorcists in Hunter x Hunter, proven by his ability to lift the restrictions on Chrollo and allow him to use Nen again. He performs exorcisms by building a wood fire, using a wooden figure, and reciting prayers, which summons a Nen beast. He then has to overcome the curse set by that beast. However, it’s unlikely Abengane will play a significant role in the Hunter x Hunter story going forward.

Alluka Zoldyck

  • Nen: Specialization

In the anime Hunter x Hunter, the Nen ability called Specialization is incredibly rare. Only a few characters, like Chrollo and Neferpitou, possess it. However, according to the author, Togashi, only one character has mastered Specialization to the absolute highest level: Alluka Zoldyck.

It’s not surprising that Alluka and Nanika are incredibly powerful. They can grant almost any wish, though there’s always a significant price to pay. Alluka was uniquely able to save Gon when he was facing a life-threatening situation. Nanika remains a mysterious figure, and her connection to the Dark Continent hasn’t been fully revealed yet.

Meruem

  • Nen: Emission

As a huge Hunter x Hunter fan, I wasn’t shocked to learn Meruem, arguably the strongest villain ever created in the series, is a master of Nen. For a long time, everyone assumed he was a Specialist type, but Yoshihiro Togashi recently revealed something amazing: Meruem is actually an Emitter! That makes him one of only two confirmed Emitter masters we’ve seen, which is just incredible when you consider his power.

Meruem is incredibly powerful, with the ability to gain the skills of anyone he consumes – a significantly stronger version of what Chrollo can do. Despite Netero’s best efforts, he couldn’t defeat Meruem and had to use the Rose Bomb, which still wasn’t immediately fatal. Had Meruem been given more time, he likely would have become truly invincible.

Isaac Netero

  • Nen: Enhancement

Isaac Netero was the Chairman of the Hunter Association for many years, a fitting role considering he was the strongest Hunter within it. The author, Yoshihiro Togashi, has stated that Netero is one of only two masters of the Enhancement Nen type. Through decades of training, he perfected his Nen ability, culminating in the incredibly powerful 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva technique, demonstrating his complete mastery of Nen.

This ability was powerful enough to overcome almost any opponent. Even though he lost to Meruem, he’s still considered one of the strongest and most intimidating Nen users in the entire series.

Zeno Zoldyck

  • Nen: Emission

Alluka isn’t the only powerful Nen user in the Zoldyck family. Her grandfather, Zeno Zoldyck, is also a highly skilled Nen master, specializing in the Emission category. Zeno’s extensive experience and talent led Isaac Netero to request his assistance when the castle was invaded during the Chimera Ant arc.

Zeno Zoldyck’s Dragon Dive is a spectacular display of his Nen mastery, and it’s considered one of the most impressive abilities in the series. The only full fight we’ve seen from him was a team battle against Chrollo, but it was cut short. It seems Zeno hasn’t unleashed his full potential yet, and fans probably won’t see the complete scope of his powers for a while. However, it’s now clear that he’s among the strongest Nen users in the Hunter x Hunter universe.

Adult Gon

  • Nen: Enhancement

Gon Freecs is the central character in the anime Hunter x Hunter. While he doesn’t typically possess advanced Nen abilities, during the Chimera Ant Arc, Gon desperately sought revenge for Kite’s death, aiming to defeat Neferpitou. To achieve this, he gave up all of his Nen potential for a massive, but temporary, power boost, often called ‘Adult Gon’ by fans.

Togashi has revealed that Gon achieved the rank of Nen Master specializing in Enhancement. This explains why Neferpitou was concerned about Meruem after witnessing Gon’s transformation – she thought Gon could become as powerful as the King. However, Gon lost all his Nen after the fight and barely survived. It’s currently unknown if he’ll ever regain his abilities, and given the slow release schedule of the manga, fans may have to wait a long time to find out. If Gon does recover his Nen, he’ll have the opportunity to fully realize his potential and potentially reach the same powerful level he demonstrated against Neferpitou, becoming a Nen Master again.
