PlayStation Fans Should Keep a Close Eye on April 15

PlayStation often follows recognizable patterns, but they’re also flexible and don’t always stick to them. This makes it hard to guess what they’ll do next, though sometimes they do seem to repeat themselves โ€“ like with the timing of PS Plus announcements. We’ve also noticed patterns in the types of games they add to PS Plus and in what they reveal during their State of Play presentations.

State of Play presentations used to happen on a predictable schedule: announcements on Tuesdays and events on Thursdays. While there were occasional deviations, the events almost always followed two days after the announcement. This regular schedule changed a few years ago, but looking at the last two years, a new pattern has become clear. This is relevant now with rumors of a new PlayStation Plus offering, leading to the question: does PlayStationโ€™s history suggest a State of Play will happen on April 16th? Based on past trends, April 15th is a date to watch, at the very least.

A reliable source known as Nate the Hate is suggesting April 16th as a possible date for the next State of Play presentation. Nate the Hate is well-known for accurately leaking Nintendo news โ€“ he previously hinted at a potential Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for the Nintendo Switch 2. While he has a good track record, it’s important to remember that all rumors should be viewed cautiously. Notably, Nate the Hate hasn’t been able to confirm the date himself, nor what will be announced, but believes the presentation will likely focus on games from third-party developers.

So, that’s the situation, but how probable is April 16th on its own? Examining past trends since 2024 actually makes it seem more likely than not.

State of Plays Happen on Wednesday More Than Thursday, But It’s The Second Most Common

As a big fan of these State of Play presentations, I’ve been tracking when they happen, and it’s interesting to see a bit of a pattern. Usually, they’re on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays โ€“ except for that special Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth one. Looking back at the last couple of years, Wednesdays have been the most common day โ€“ six of them, actually! There have been three on Thursdays and only two on Tuesdays. It used to be that Thursdays were more frequent, but things have shifted. That doesn’t mean Thursday is out of the question, though! It’s totally possible we’ll see a return to Thursdays, maybe even starting in 2026. The numbers show Thursday is still a definite possibility, even though Wednesday seems to be the favorite right now.

Lock In on April 15 for Something PlayStation Related

Based on past trends, PlayStation players might get confirmation of a State of Play event on April 14th, with the event itself happening on April 15th. However, this is just based on observed patterns, not current industry news. If the event is actually planned for April 16th, April 15th will still be a key date โ€“ fans will find out one way or another whether a State of Play is happening. Historically, announcements have shifted from being made two days before an event to just one day before, making April 15th a likely date for news either way.

Over the past two years, across 12 State of Play presentations, most had very little delay between announcement and event. Seven were announced and held the very next day. Three had a one-day pause, and just two had a two-day gap. Interestingly, the presentations with longer delays were usually special events. The two-day gaps specifically highlighted previews of Ghost of Yotei and 007: First Light, with the first State of Play of 2024 being the only standard presentation to use a two-day announcement window.

The three-day breaks are easily explained. One was specifically for the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth showcase, and the most recent one was probably longer because it was the most extensive State of Play in a long time. If you remove those special presentations, the schedule mostly consists of seven one-day gaps followed by a single two-day gap.

If a new PlayStation presentation is happening next week, expect to find out for sure on April 15th. An announcement might come even earlier, but current reports suggest thatโ€™s the date weโ€™ll get confirmation either way.
