How Do Holo-Arenas Work in No Man’s Sky?

The recent Xeno Arena update to No Man’s Sky introduces exciting new Holo-Arena battles! Players can now collect, train, and even breed holographic versions of creatures to compete against others – a bit like Pokémon, Palworld, or Holochess from Star Wars. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about Holo battles: how they work, where to find arenas, and how to build a winning team.

Where Are Holo-Arenas Found In No Man’s Sky?

Holo-Arenas are small tables used for miniature, holographic battles between creatures. You can find them in various locations throughout the universe, such as:

  • The Space Anomaly
  • Space Stations
  • Settlements
  • Trade Outposts

As a critic, I found the game consistently offers a challenge. You’ll never be short of opponents – there’s always an AI character ready to go head-to-head, or you can jump into player-versus-player battles. What’s really cool is this character, Iteration Oceanus, at the Anomaly. He switches up his team every day, giving everyone a fresh, shared daily challenge. It’s a neat way to keep things interesting and give the community something to discuss.

While players can’t currently create custom tables, we plan to add the ability to build your own Holo-Arena tables in a future update. This feature isn’t available in the latest Xeno Arena update.

How Do Holo-Arena Battles Work In No Man’s Sky?

In No Man’s Sky, Holo-Arena battles are fought in turns. Each player chooses a team of up to three creatures, but only one creature battles at a time. You can decide which creature fights when and switch between them during the battle.

When a creature is defeated in battle, another one automatically takes its place. The goal of the game is to eliminate all of your opponent’s creatures. Luckily, your pets aren’t actually hurt—battles are completely holographic! They’ll be fully healed and ready to go at the beginning of each new match, no matter what happened before.

Each turn, players will select one of their creature’s five abilities to use, and then their opponent will take their turn.

Creature Affinities

Every creature is naturally strong or weak against others, based on the environment where it originates. These strengths and weaknesses balance each other out. For instance, a creature adapted to fire will be very effective against icy opponents, but vulnerable to radiation.

Switching between different creatures during battle is a good strategy to find favorable opponents. This makes having a varied team of creatures important for players.

The 8 creature affinities in No Man’s Sky are:

  • Frost
  • Fire
  • Tropical
  • Radioactive
  • Toxic
  • Mechanical
  • Anomalous
  • Desert

Since computer-controlled characters will group together based on their home environment, you can create a team specifically designed to defeat them.

Creature Abilities

Each creature has unique abilities, and many of these abilities work well with their specific type. You can only use one ability per turn, but some abilities have effects that last for multiple turns. You’ll be able to see these ongoing effects displayed below the creature’s health.

Abilities can either hurt opponents, restore health, or provide helpful or harmful effects to creatures. Stronger abilities usually require a waiting period before they can be used again, and many attacks have a chance of failing, based on how agile the target is.

Pay attention to any effects appearing under your ally’s health bar – some can cause a lot of damage after a few turns, so it’s good to be aware of them.

Creature Stats

When it comes to how capable creatures are, they each have three key stats: Combat Effectiveness, Agility, and Health. These stats are ranked with letters – like C, A, or S – just like ship stats in No Man’s Sky.

The creature with the highest Agility goes first in combat.

You can boost these stats by participating in more Holo battles and using Retroviral Pellets to edit your genes.

Rewards For Winning Holo-Arena Games In No Man’s Sky

Holo-Arena games in No Man’s Sky are a fun and now a profitable way to earn Nanites. These Nanites are important because you need them to expand your Companion Register, which lets you tame more creatures.

Besides Nanites, players will sometimes get Retroviral Pellets when they win battles. These pellets change their creatures’ genes, making them stronger. Creatures also get better through combat, developing helpful mutations as they gain experience.

When we take down champions, it’s huge! Not only do we get a great reward, but we also unlock the chance to challenge even more champions. This is exactly how we’re going to climb those galactic leaderboards and prove we’re the best!
