Steam Extraction Game Came Out Last Month and is Already Shutting Down

The sci-fi extraction game THE CUBE, SAVE US launched on Steam on March 17th, but it hasn’t attracted enough players to stay running. The developers have announced that the game will shut down on May 7th at 6 PM Pacific Time / 9 PM Eastern Time, meaning it will only be available for 52 days.

That’s not a very long lifespan for a game, actually. Several online games have closed down much faster – for example, PlayStation’s Concord lasted just two weeks, and The Culling 2 only survived for eight days. Many other games haven’t lasted much longer before being discontinued. While some single-player games also shut down, or have their multiplayer features removed (like Dragon Age: Inquisition), it’s noticeable how many recent closures are for games that require a constant online connection or are entirely online.

THE CUBE, SAVE US Shuts Down on May 7

The game THE CUBE, SAVE US aimed to be a long-term, free-to-play title, but it couldn’t attract enough players to spend money on in-game items. It started with over 5,000 players, but quickly dropped to around 200. Although a demo of the game was popular during the Steam Next Fest in October, the full game received mostly negative reviews on Steam. As of today, it has 398 reviews, and only 33% of players recommend it.

The majority of negative feedback for the game centered around server problems, clunky combat, and a push to spend money to win. However, some players did appreciate the game’s graphics and were disappointed to hear it was shutting down. On a positive note, all purchases made in THE CUBE, SAVE US have been refunded to players as of April 9th, so players should check their accounts for the refund.

How to Check Your Refund If You’ve Purchased Anything in THE CUBE, SAVE US

  • As of this writing, developer XLGames reports that full refunds for all products have been issued through Steam.
  • If you have made a purchase but have not received your refund, please contact Customer Support with a screenshot of your Steam receipt that includes the transaction ID.

With the game shutting down in less than a month, it’s probably too late for any changes, especially considering refunds are being processed. However, it will still be available for a little while longer if you want to try it out. While it didn’t appeal to everyone, the game had some interesting concepts, even if they weren’t fully realized. The story is set in a world where a giant cube destroyed everything, mirroring a similar event in Fortnite. Decades later, survivors navigate through 27 constantly shifting areas called Cube Gates. Each gate leads to a different location – a city, a pyramid, an amusement park – making every match and escape route unique.

Despite a recent surge in popularity for games where you collect resources, THE CUBE, SAVE US still managed to make an impact. Even larger, better-funded games like Marathon and ARC Raiders have faced challenges, showing that success isn’t guaranteed even with more resources.
