In God of War Ragnarok, there’s an abundance of content waiting for you. You’ll encounter numerous formidable bosses and have the opportunity to delve into vast, intricate areas. The game is so richly detailed that it might be challenging to uncover all its secrets in a single playthrough.

As soon as you think you’ve discovered every corner of the game world in God of War Ragnarok, it springs a hidden surprise: an expansive secret area tucked away in Vanaheim. This overlooked treasure can slip by unnoticed if you don’t keep a keen eye on your surroundings. In this concealed location, you’ll stumble upon exclusive side quests, formidable boss battles, hard-to-find resources, and a host of other rewards. The guide provided below will fill you in on all the details about this secret spot.

How To Unlock The Crater Region In Vanaheim

To access the Crater region, first, you need to finish the mission called “The Creatures of Prophecy“. During this mission, aid Freyr (Freya’s brother) in resolving a significant problem and then return to his camp. Keep track if you have completed this mission. Once it is finished, follow these instructions:

  1. Head to the Nearest Mystic Gateway
    • On your way, you’ll encounter Helka, the pig-dog creature from Freyr’s camp. Helka will prompt you to follow, initiating the “Scent of Survival” side quest.
  2. Follow Helka
    • Stay on Helka’s trail and board a boat when you reach the water.
    • Take the newly opened path to the right.
    • Once back on land, continue following Helka. Defeat any enemies you encounter along the way.
  3. Restore the Sunlight
    • Eventually, you’ll reach a Celestial Altar. Use it to summon Skoll, the wolf that brings back the sun, to progress further.
  4. Reach the Cliffside
    • Continue following Helka until you arrive at a cliffside.
    • Use your Air Boat here and watch the cutscene.

Afterward, you’ll arrive in the undiscovered area of Vanaheim known as The Crater.

What To Do After Reaching The Crater

After exploring a bit, you’ll find a nearby Mystic Gateway. From here, you have a few options:

  1. Continue your main mission as usual.
  2. Visit any other realm, just as you could previously.
  3. Alternatively, take time to explore this new region, which is packed with content.

Exploring The Crater is packed with diverse activities and tough tests that could easily occupy more than ten hours of your time. But beware, several bosses in this region are particularly formidable. If they prove too tough for you, don’t worry – come back later after boosting your character level and enhancing your gear!

It’s suggested that you play through the Crater region prior to wrapping up the main storyline. This area significantly enhances your overall gaming experience and readies you for the game’s tougher end-level challenges. However, if you decide to explore it after completing the main story, the dialogue and character interactions will still be relevant and informative.
