Nintendo Shutting Down Switch eShop And Other Services In China In 2026

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for Nintendo, this news has left me feeling a tad melancholic and rather perplexed. I remember the excitement of unboxing my first Nintendo Switch back in 2017, the thrill of exploring new worlds, and the camaraderie shared over countless gaming sessions.

Nintendo is shutting down the Switch eShop and all other online services in China in 2026.

Tencent, responsible for managing Nintendo’s sales within the country, announced on Tuesday that the Nintendo Switch eShop will cease selling games and software by March 31, 2026. From May 15, 2026 onwards, owners of the Nintendo Switch will no longer be able to download new games, DLC or redeem codes for their system.

All other online services will also shut down on May 15.

If you’re one of the fortunate Nintendo Switch owners with an active WeChat account, here’s some exciting news! From November 27, 2024 to March 31, 2026, the company is generously offering up to four free Nintendo Switch games. You can pick from a selection of games on the list provided.

  • New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Super Mario Party
  • Mario Tennis Aces
  • Yoshi’s Crafted World
  • Flexible Brain School
  • Dr Kawashima’s Brain Exercises
  • Kirby Star Allies
  • New Pokémon Snap
  • Pokémon Go! Pikachu

As a gamer, I can’t help but wonder about the future of my Nintendo Switch gaming experience in China.
